Hiking and biking enthusiasts looking for history and scenery have a new place to trek in Armstrong County. The new walk is the reconstructed Cowanshannock Trail, a 1.3-mile-long path in Rayburn Township along the former Pennsylvania Railroad bed following the Cowanshannock Creek to the Buttermilk Falls Bridge and on to Buttermilk Falls. There it also conn

ects to the longer Armstrong Trail. Trail groups and county officials celebrated the trail's completion with a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony on Monday. Promoters say they hope the trail will help attract visitors and infuse the area with tourism dollars. "Buttermilk Falls is a great destination point," Armstrong County Commissioner Patty Kirkpatrick said. "We're looking to capitalize on bringing our citizens and outside people here for a walk and to enjoy the scenery of the county and connect that to other assets. Historically, the trail was used by the railroad company to transport coal mined by the Kittanning Iron and Steel Manufacturing Co. and the finished bricks from the Cowanshannock Brick and Manufacturing Co. and the Williard Brick Co. The village of Buttermilk was inhabited by laborers who immigrated from European countries, forming part of the county's heritage. Visible signs from the railroad can still be seen along the trail, Commissioner Jim Scahill said. "The trail is already doing phenomenal," said Pam Meade, the association's president. "There are folks on that trail all of the time."
