We had the wonderful opportunity to introduce our local 4-H Cloverbuds to the fascinating world of Box Turtles with the help of our very own office turtle, Myrtle! ๐Ÿข

The Cloverbud program, offered through Penn State Extension of Armstrong County, gives 5- to 7-year-olds the chance to explore, learn, and grow through differing activities. Myrtle helped us teach the group a little about Box Turtles, their unique characteristics, and what makes these amazing creatures special.

One of the coolest things about Box Turtles is their unique ability to pull their head, legs, and tail tightly inside their shell and close up using a hinged portion of their lower shell (plastron) for protection.
We loved seeing the curiosity and excitement from these young learners! We hope Myrtle inspired a few future wildlife enthusiasts along the way.

Weโ€™re excited to announce the construction of our Agricultural Education Center! ๐Ÿ—๏ธ

โœ”๏ธ Located at 143 Armsdale Road, Kittanning

This Center will be a dedicated space designed to be a central place where agriculture, education, community services, and innovation come together under one roof.

Agriculture touches every part of our daily lives โ€” from the food on our tables, to the clothes we wear, to the products we use every day. This Center will help us share that story with the public while providing hands on learning opportunities for our farmers, families, students, and community partners. ๐ŸŒฝ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿท๐Ÿฎ

Key components of the Center:
๐Ÿ”‘ Internet Cafรฉ โ€” Free public internet, laptop style tablets, digital literacy classes, continuing education classes, and farm to table products from local vendors.
๐Ÿ”‘ Tele Health Suite โ€” A private space for rural residents to attend virtual medical appointments.
๐Ÿ”‘ Commercial Kitchen โ€” PA Dept. of Agriculture licensed space for farmers, growers, and entrepreneurs to create value added products, test new business ideas, and extend the shelf life of perishable products through flash freezing.
๐Ÿ”‘ Teaching Greenhouse โ€” A year round learning space for growing native plants, vegetables, herbs, flower arranging, seasonal workshops, and community groups โ€” all with broadband and streaming capabilities.
๐Ÿ”‘ Teaching Kitchen โ€” A residential style kitchen for in person classes, recorded cooking demonstrations, and live streamed interactive programs with area senior centers.
๐Ÿ”‘ Outdoor Classroom โ€” A 1,300 square foot learning area for youth camps, sportsmenโ€™s programs, outdoor food preparation demonstrations, and seasonal markets.
๐Ÿ”‘ Community Gardens โ€” Raised beds and accessible gardening areas for hands on learning and fresh food production.
๐Ÿ”‘ Incubator Office Space โ€” A flexible workspace for start ups, entrepreneurs, and partner agencies.

Stay tuned for updates!

This project was financed in part by two grants: the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority, Capital Projects Fund and the USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Program. Thank you to our grant funders!

Thank you to Worthington-West Franklin Community Library for inviting the Armstrong Conservation District to be part of their Unearth a Story Summer Reading Program!

We read Box Turtle by John Himmelman and introduced the kids to a real-life box turtleโ€”Myrtle! The story follows the life of a box turtle through an ever-changing landscape, from 1879 to the present day, and highlights how conservation efforts can help restore and protect her forest habitat.

To make the day extra special, we donated a copy of Box Turtle to the library in Myrtleโ€™s honor, so other young readers can enjoy the story and learn about box turtles and conservation for years to come!

Thank you again Worthington-West Franklin Community Library for helping us share a little conservation education with the community!
