Long before highways carried most of our freight, railroads were the lifeline of Armstrong County’s industrial economy. Coal mined from the hillsides of communities like Sagamore depended on structures like this massive coal tipple to move the region’s most valuable resource from the ground to markets across America.

A coal tipple was where raw coal was brought from the mine, sorted, and loaded directly into waiting railroad cars. From there, trains hauled Armstrong County coal to steel mills, factories, power plants, and homes throughout the region. Without the railroad (and the stations that supported it) this entire system would not have worked.

Photos like this remind us that the Kittanning Passenger Station was more than a passenger stop. It was part of a much larger transportation network that fueled the growth of our communities and supported thousands of working families whose livelihoods were tied to coal, rail, and industry.

Today, as we work to restore the historic Kittanning Passenger Station and Freight Depot, we are not just saving a building.

We are preserving the story of the people, industries, and railroads that shaped Armstrong County.

Every beam restored and every brick preserved helps keep this history alive for the next generation.

UPDATE - Famous Steam Locomotive Could Visit for our Nation's Birthday.

New reports are suggesting that the Union Pacific Big Boy #4014 locomotive may come directly through Western PA and might be seen in Beaver County.

According to information released from Union Pacific and TrainsPro, a letter was submitted February 10, 2026 to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) in which Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern are seeking permission to operate the Big Boy in cab-signal territory across Pennsylvania and Ohio as part of its historic trip to the east coast.

The waiver request seeks permission for the locomotive to operate over cab-signal territory between Harrisburg, PA and Cleveland, OH — a route over the former Pennsylvania Railroad main line that includes Horseshoe Curve. The Big Boy is equipped with positive train control, which the railroads say eliminates the need for cab signals.

The trip is tentatively scheduled to run between May 25 and July 29, 2026.

Three Pittsburgh museums are getting sustained recognition by voters and experts for their museum offerings.

The Heinz History Center was named No. 1 history museum in America for the third year in a row for the USA Today Annual Reader’s Choice Awards, which has its audience vote on a variety of the nation’s greatest attractions. Additionally, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh was named No. 1 children’s museum and the Kamin Science Center ranked No. 3 for science centers.

A Reminder: The Kittanning Train Station Restoration Is Moving Forward

Many people are surprised to learn that there is an active effort underway to restore the historic Kittanning train station.

The Kittanning Train Station Restoration Project was formed to preserve this important landmark and explore its future as a community asset.

For generations, the Kittanning Train Station served as a gateway to our town—welcoming visitors, connecting residents to the region, and supporting local commerce. While the building has been quiet for many years, its story is far from over.

Restoration takes time, planning, and community support. This page exists to keep that story visible, share progress, and remind everyone that the station still matters.

Thanksgiving Traditions on the Rails

As families across the country gather for Thanksgiving, we’re reminded of a beautiful piece of American history when holiday travel began with the sound of a whistle, the rhythm of steel wheels, and a warm ride home on the rails.

For generations, passengers boarded trains right here in Kittanning to reunite with loved ones, share a meal, and celebrate the season. Our historic station was part of those journeys!!

Today, as we work to restore and reimagine the Kittanning Train Station, we honor the stories of all who once passed through its doors. The tradition of Thanksgiving travel reminds us why this project matters: preserving history, building community, and keeping our shared heritage alive.

🚂 Kittanning Train Station History Spotlight

Did you know our train station traces its roots back to one of the most important early railroads in Western Pennsylvania?

The Allegheny Valley Railroad originally operated the rail line that served the Kittanning Station. Chartered in 1854, this railroad helped open Armstrong County to industry, commerce, and travel. Throughout the late 1800s, the line connected our region to Pittsburgh and beyond, carrying everything from passengers to coal, glass, iron, and manufactured goods.

By the 1890s, the Allegheny Valley Railroad was absorbed into the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) — one of the largest and most influential railroad systems in American history. PRR continued operating the Kittanning line for decades, supporting both freight and passenger service through the early 1960s.

This little station played a big role in how Kittanning grew, worked, and connected to the outside world. As we continue the revitalization journey, celebrating its story helps us remember why this building matters — and why it deserves a new chapter. 💛

Discovering History Inside the Freight Building

This photo shows one of the original freight doors and the counterweight hardware still in place inside the Kittanning Train Station’s freight building. Imagine the movement of goods, the bustle of workers, and the daily rhythm of trains arriving and departing from this very spot.

Welcome to the Kittanning Train Station Restoration Project

This historic station has stood in the heart of Kittanning since 1895. For generations, it was a gateway into our town where families gathered, soldiers departed and returned, industry moved, travelers arrived, and life flowed through Armstrong County one train at a time.

Armstrong County Historical Museum/Genealogical Society’s goal is to restore and transform the station into a vibrant cultural and civic center — a place for community events, arts, education, history programs, outdoor gathering spaces, local entrepreneurship, and meaningful connection.

This project is community-led.
It will thrive because of local pride, partnership, and the many hands and hearts that care deeply about Kittanning’s story.

Over the coming months, we will be:

• Sharing historic photographs and memories
• Highlighting architectural restoration progress
• Introducing the vision and partners involved
• Inviting the community to help shape the future of this space
