⚓🇺🇸Ever wonder what it takes to overhaul a nuclear-powered submarine?

It takes massive industrial power—and the electronic industrial controls mechanics who keep it all online. From the giant waterfront cranes lifting multi-ton components to the high-precision CNC machinery fabricating critical parts, these mechanics maintain the digital nervous system of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

They bring the technical grit required to support the Navy’s undersea dominance.

Once work on Wilson Road is completed, the contractor will complete final paving on the portion of Whipple Road from the Wentworth Street intersection to the Shapleigh Road/Woodlawn Avenue intersection.

Update: Starting August 27, 2026.

Traffic Impacts:
Drivers may experience short delays while traveling through these construction zones. Please follow all posted signage; traffic flaggers will be on-site to help keep vehicles moving safely.

Eighty-nine years ago, on Aug. 24, 1937, the Salmon-class submarine USS Snapper (SS 185) launched into the Piscataqua River from Portsmouth Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine. ⚓️🇺🇸

Commissioned on Dec. 16, 1937, Snapper made history as the first submarine constructed at a U.S. government navy yard with an all-welded steel hull.

Snapper went on to serve in 11 war patrols in the Pacific Ocean during World War II, earning six battle stars for her service.

⚙️Introducing the Class of 2026 Apprenticeship Programs Outstanding Graduates Aidan Plumpton and Madison Mahoney! Read about them below:

⚓Trades Apprenticeship Program Outstanding Graduate: Madison Mahoney, production machinery mechanic

Madison Mahoney credits the apprenticeship program with giving her the knowledge, skills, and resources to build a career with a purpose. She feels the experience has inspired her to pursue additional education and eventually work toward mechanical engineering, She hopes to build a lifelong career at PNSY focused on supporting its people and mission.

“The apprenticeship program has given me a tremendous amount of resources, knowledge and skills to set me up successfully for real life. It gave me a future I can be proud of.”

⚓Worker Skills Progression Program Outstanding Graduate: Aiden Plumpton, marine machinery mechanic

Aidan Plumpton began his apprenticeship in 2022 after hearing about the program at a Portsmouth Naval Shipyard hiring event. Plumpton credits the combination of the tribal knowledge shared by his teammates for preparing him for his career at the shipyard.

“My greatest achievement is being able to work on a boat and see it to completion,” said Plumpton. “To be able to see a system you built be delivered back to the fleet is very rewarding.”
