From smartphones and laptops at your desk to e-scooters, tools, and job-related devices, lithium-ion batteries power much of our work and daily life. When used incorrectly or damaged, these batteries can overheat, catch fire, or even explode, putting people and workplaces at risk.

Always use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. Follow product instructions, charge on a hard, flat surface, and avoid overcharging. Once fully charged, unplug the device or remove the battery.

AVOID UNNECESSARY TRAVEL‼️

Please refrain from traveling unless absolutely necessary. Remaining at home not only ensures your safety but also aids emergency responders and snowplows by keeping the roads clear. Fewer vehicles allow these teams to operate more efficiently.

By staying off the roads, you reduce the risk of accidents and lessen the strain on emergency services.

Stay off the roads, but if you HAVE to venture out:
- Ensure you give adequate space to snowplows and emergency vehicles.
- Maintain a safe distance and reduce your speed on icy roads.
- Before you head out, check road conditions at DriveNC.gov.

1/31/2026 10:10 AM: A look at radar is showing an excellent example of what makes snow accumulation forecasting tricky. Across the coastal plain we're seeing a widespread area of lighter snow with some very narrow but heavier banding embedded - we're talking widths of maybe a mile or two. Over east Carteret, more intense snow is falling with a decent coating here at the office. Just west and across Highway 17, a tongue of dry air is keeping snow at bay.

Snow will continue through the day with more widespread moderate to heavy snow setting in this afternoon and tonight.

Extreme cold can make your pipes freeze and break. Here are ways to help avoid that:
- Open your cabinet doors so warm air can get to your pipes
- Let water drip slowly from your faucet
- Keep your home warmer than 55°F
