Homicide Investigation

On May 29, 2026, at approximately 2:53 a.m., officers from the Klamath Falls Police Department responded to the 500 block of Market Street following a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male lying on the ground suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to Sky Lakes Medical Center for treatment, but later died from his injuries.

The Klamath County Major Crime Team was activated and assumed responsibility for the investigation. The Klamath County Major Crime Team is comprised of detectives from the Klamath Falls Police Department, Oregon State Police, the Klamath County Sheriff's Office, and the Klamath County District Attorney's Office.

During the course of the investigation, detectives identified the shooter as 84-year-old John Bush. Initial information indicated that the victim was attempting to break into Bush’s vehicle when he was confronted, resulting in a brief altercation that led to the shooting.

As the investigation progressed, detectives conducted additional interviews and reviewed surveillance footage from the area. As a result, detectives uncovered discrepancies between Bush's initial account of the event and what the evidence collected during the investigation revealed.
Based on the findings of the investigation, John Bush was arrested and lodged at the Klamath County Jail on charges of Manslaughter in the First Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. The investigation remains ongoing.

In May, we observe National Police Week—a dedicated time to honor the courageous law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

National Police Week serves as a period of reflection and remembrance, when officers stand alongside the families of the fallen to reaffirm the meaning behind the badge. It reinforces the reality that every shift carries both risk and purpose. This week offers law enforcement professionals an opportunity to pause, pay tribute to those who gave their lives in service, and feel the support of a grateful nation that recognizes the weight of their commitment. For many, the observance is deeply personal—names etched in memorials represent partners, friends, and family. That connection strengthens their purpose to serve, protect, and carry forward the legacy of those who are no longer with us.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and designated the week in which it falls as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress, this observance pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty while safeguarding their communities.

We invite you to join us in showing your support for our law enforcement personnel during Police Week 2026 as well as honoring one of our fallen. Sergeant Richard C. Swan, Sr. who gave his life in the line of duty on November 16, 1988. He served 21 years as a patrol officer and sergeant with our department before his death at the age of 44.

Public Service Announcement: Electric Bikes and Motorcycles

As the popularity of electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric motorcycles continues to grow across Oregon and our community, it’s important for all riders and motorists to understand the laws, safety practices, and shared responsibilities that come with these vehicles.

Know Your Vehicle Class

E-bikes in Oregon are divided into three classes based on speed and motor assistance. Each class has different rules about where you can ride. Electric motorcycles, on the other hand, are treated similarly to traditional motorcycles and require proper licensing, registration, and insurance.

Follow Traffic Laws

E-bike and electric motorcycle riders must obey all traffic signals, signs, and lane rules. Riders should use bike lanes where permitted and avoid sidewalks. Electric motorcycles must follow all road laws applicable to motor vehicles.

Wear Proper Safety Gear

Helmets are required for riders under 16 on e-bikes and for all motorcycle riders. Regardless of age, wearing a helmet is strongly recommended for everyone. Protective clothing, lights, and reflective gear can significantly reduce injury risk.

Stay Visible and Alert

Many accidents occur because riders are not easily seen. Use front and rear lights, especially at dusk or night, and wear bright or reflective clothing. Always stay aware of your surroundings and anticipate the actions of other drivers.

Respect Shared Spaces

Trails, bike paths, and roadways are shared environments. Ride at safe speeds, yield to pedestrians, and signal your intentions clearly. Courtesy and caution help prevent accidents and maintain access for everyone.

Avoid Distractions and Impairment

Operating any electric vehicle while distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol is dangerous and illegal. Stay focused and ride responsibly.

By understanding the rules and practicing safe riding habits, we can ensure that electric bikes and motorcycles remain a safe, efficient, and enjoyable mode of transportation for everyone in our community.

P.S., The video shows an incident from early today in the downtown area. This appears to be an e-motorcycle being ridden by a juvenile. If you have information about this rider, we would like to speak with them regarding their reckless and potentially criminal behavior.

It is with a heavy heart to announce the retirement of K9 Bullitt.

Last month, Bullitt was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer that nearly claimed his life. He is currently receiving treatment; however, continuing his duties as a working K9 is no longer possible.

Bullitt will spend his remaining time with his family and handler, Sergeant Trahern Fox, enjoying the experiences and comforts he was unable to fully embrace while serving on patrol.

K9 Bullitt began his service with the City of Klamath Falls in August 2017. A Belgian Malinois trained in both Patrol and Narcotics, Bullitt has been an invaluable member of our department and community.

Bullitt, you will always be remembered. Thank you for your unwavering dedication, loyal service, and commitment to the Klamath Falls Police Department and the community you served.
