Academy Place Knightstown

Academy Place Apartments is a “55 and Up” Senior Living Facility in Knightstown Indiana.

In the fall of 2018, Academy Place Apartments, Inc., A 501c3 non-profit, purchased this historic building. Academy Place Apartments, Inc., was set up to manage the building and will continue to house its senior and disabled residents, as well as serve the entire community with programming and services. Currently, major renovations of the building are ongoing.

The Academy building, located in the Knightstown Historic District at 340 N. Adams Street, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, by the United States Department of Interior.

The Academy building is a national treasure located in our community of Knightstown that is not only a landmark for travelers down the National Road, but will continue to serve this community for generations to come.

HISTORY OF THE KNIGHTSTOWN ACADEMY BUILDING

The first school of learning was built in Knightstown in 1832 as a Quaker Seminary. For the next four decades, various structures served as Knightstown’s school houses. In 1872, John I. Morrison and family retired to Knightstown. Mr. Morrison had served not only on the IU Board of Trustees, but also in the Indiana House of Representatives and Senate. Once appointed to the local school board, Mr. Morrison was instrumental in the design and construction of the glorious Academy building that stands today.

The Academy building finished construction in 1875 at a cost of $25,000. The original building is a three story red brick of the Second Empire architectural style. It features a slate covered mansard roof with ornamental round arched dormer windows and twin turrets which support the glorious globe and telescope atop. The full basement has walls that are three feet thick. Beautiful twin walnut staircases climb to the top floor. The first class graduated from this building in 1877.

In 1887, a two story addition was added to the rear of the building. In 1931, an additional two story wing was added on the west side. In 1921, the gymnasium was built (now known as The Hoosier Gym, film site of the movie “Hoosiers”). The Academy served grades 1 through 12 until 1966 when a new high school was built north of town. The Academy continued to serve elementary classes until 1987. In 1992, it was purchased by a Michigan company that repurposed it as an apartment building for senior citizens and the disabled, including 38 apartments.
