Last night, 6/7 at approximately 2221 hours, the Knox-Center Twp. Fire Department responded to assist the Washington Twp. Fire Department on a residential structure fire. Squad 10, Tanker 10, and Chief 10 responded and arrived shortly after Rescue 12 and found a 2 story residential structure with fire on the first and second floors as well as the basement. It was unknown if anyone was in the structure and crews advanced 2 hoselines into the first floor and basement simultaneously to allow for a search to be completed.
After 20 minutes, crews were eventually told to abandon the structure due to deteriorating structural integrity. Crews then operated in the defensive strategy for the remainder of the incident. It was determined that no one was home at the time of the incident and there were no reported injuries.
Squad 10 operated for approximately 4 hours before returning to service.

Yesterday, 6/3 at approximately 8:45 pm, the Knox-Center Twp. Fire Department as well as Hamlet-Davis Fire Territory and Starke County EMS as part of our MABAS box alarm assignment were dispatched to the 5600 block of 100 north for a reported structure fire.
While en route, units were updated that it was a working fire in an attached garage. Upon the arrival of Chief 10, he assumed command and upgraded the alarm level to a 1st alarm. Squad 10 arrived right behind and assumed the role of 1st due engine, performing a 360 size-up and stretching the initial attack line. Squad 10 was able to knock down the fire in the garage and then move to the interior entry door to cut off any extension and allow crews to search.
Truck 10 arrived on the scene and performed a primary search on floors 1 & 2, which proved negative for victims. They then transitioned to check for any extension.
Sub sequential units arrived and assisted with stretching a backup hose line and checking for any fire extension in the living space. Extension to the living space was minimal with most being held to the attic space.
This fire is currently under investigation by the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Thank you to Hamlet-Davis Fire Territory, North-Judson Wayne Twp. Fire Department, Washington Twp. Fire Department, Bass-Lake California Fire Department, as well as Starke County EMS and EMA for their assistance.

The importance of closing doors...

This morning, 5/29 at approximately 6:11 a.m. the Knox-Center Township Fire Department was dispatched to assist the Bass Lake California Township Fire Department with a reported residential structure fire. Due to the homeowner keeping the door to the fire room closed, the fire was contained to a single room and there was minimal damage done to the rest of the structure.

Yesterday evening 5/26, members with the Knox-Center Twp. Fire Department spent a few hours drilling on our portable bandsaw, 2 halligan forcible entry, and our 150’ bumper line.

•Our portable bandsaw is a valuable piece of equipment that can be used for impalements or situations where more precise and delicate cuts are required.

•2-bar or halligan forcible entry is a technique where our two initial officers or firefighters use 2 halligans to force an inward swinging door to gain entry.

•Our 150’ bumper line is commonly used on vehicle as well as structural fires where short set backs are presented.

Attached is a video of the final scenario where members put the 150’ bumper line and forcible entry to use simulating our first arriving “engine” and “truck”.
