We have recently seen an uptick in illegal dumping around Marion County. Illegal dumping is more than just a local eyesore; it is a violation of Iowa law that endangers public health, damages the environment, and places a heavy financial burden on taxpayers. While it might seem like a quick way to get rid of an old couch or a pile of tires, the long-term consequences are severe and far-reaching. The average cost at the landfill to properly dispose of these items is $5.00-$10.00.
In Iowa, Governmental entities spend valuable tax dollars every year on cleanup efforts. These are funds and resources that could otherwise be used for vital community services like road maintenance, park improvements, or public safety.

Legal Consequences and Penalties

Iowa law is clear: discarding solid waste onto any unauthorized land or water is prohibited. Under the Iowa Code, a first-time violation for dumping items over 10 pounds or 15 cubic feet can carry a civil penalty of $1,000. Subsequent offenses can double or triple that amount, reaching up to $3,000.
