Measles Information & MMR Vaccines

Iowa HHS and local public health agencies are responding to an ongoing measles outbreak in southern Iowa. As of August 24, 17 confirmed cases have been reported in Iowa in 2026, with evidence of person-to-person spread.

It is a good time to make sure you and your family know how to recognize measles and protect yourselves.

Please review the information below from Iowa HHS to learn about:
• Measles symptoms
• What to do if you think you may have measles
• MMR vaccine recommendations

MMR vaccines are available FREE of charge to everyone, regardless of insurance status.

Be aware if you find a bat indoors. A bat bite can be so small that you can’t tell it’s there. If you don’t know whether the bat touched you, then you are considered potentially exposed to rabies.
If this happens, it’s important to catch the bat so it can be tested. If the bat does have rabies, you will need shots (vaccines) to prevent rabies infection.

Ticks and mosquitoes are no fun when you’re outside having summer fun! Both ticks and mosquitos can possibly make you sick if you get one of their bites. There are ways that you can protect yourself, your family and friends from bites this summer:
- Use an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent. When used as directed, they are effective.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing that covers arms and legs.
- Get rid of standing water – like rainwater that might have collected in something in the yard. Mosquitoes might use this to breed so make sure to dump any access water.

Before school starts, make sure your child is up to date on their required vaccines. Waiting until the last minute can make it harder to get an appointment and could delay your child from starting school on time.

-Kindergarten: DTaP, Polio, MMR, Varicella (Chickenpox), and Hepatitis B vaccines are required.
-7th Grade: Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines are required.
-12th Grade: A second dose of the Meningococcal vaccine is required.

Iowa law requires students to have these vaccines before they can attend school, unless they have a valid Certificate of Immunization Exemption.
