Tennessee Valley Authority

Tennessee Valley Authority Serving the Tennessee Valley through Energy, Environment, and Economic Development. www.tva.gov TVA makes no profit and receives no tax money.

For more than nine decades, the Tennessee Valley Authority has provided affordable electricity, environmental stewardship and economic development opportunities to the Tennessee Valley. TVA was established by Congress in 1933 to address a wide range of environmental, economic and technological issues, including the need for low-cost electricity, and navigation and flood control along the Tennessee

River system. TVA is fully self-financing, funding virtually all operations through electricity sales and power system bond financing. TVA’s power service territory includes most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia, covering 80,000 square miles and providing electricity to more than 9 million people at prices below the national average, TVA sells electricity to 153 local power companies and 56 directly served industries and federal facilities. Mission:
TVA was built for the people – to improve the quality of life in a seven-state region through the integrated management of the region’s resources. The mission focuses on three key areas:
• Energy – To provide reliable, affordable electric power throughout the Tennessee Valley.
• Environment – To be a steward of the region’s natural resources.
• Economic Development – To serve as a catalyst for sustainable economic development. ENERGY:
As the nation’s largest government-owned power provider, TVA delivers reliable, competitively priced electricity local power companies and major industrial customers and federal installations. ENVIRONMENT:

This Father’s Day, we’re honoring the fathers who pass down more than a profession—they pass down a legacy of purpose and connection.

For Jimmy Hinch, linework is more than a job; it’s a way to power lives. As his son Josh watched him maintain our transmission system that energizes homes, hospitals, schools, and businesses across seven states, he found his own passion for this important work. Together, they embody a tradition of service, dedication, and pride that lights up our communities.

Father's Day is this Sunday, so we are throwing it back to a TVA father-son duo! 👨‍👦🙌
The late Ranzie Standifer worked as a lineman and line foreman for TVA from 1939 to 1966. His dedication inspired his son, Jim, who went on to spend 30 years shaping the design of our nuclear and fossil plants. Together, the duo logged 51 years of service that helped keep the region connected and moving forward.

First fire. Grid synchronization. Two major milestones for the Cumberland Combined Cycle project.

⚡ On May 29, Combustion Turbine Unit 1 synchronized with TVA’s transmission system, a key step that confirms the unit is ready to operate as part of the electric grid.

🔥 On May 31, Unit 2 achieved first fire, safely igniting fuel and beginning its startup testing.

These milestones mark major progress as testing continues on TVA’s newest natural gas plant. Once operational later this year, the Cumberland Combined Cycle project will provide 1,450 megawatts of new electricity generation capacity to support reliability across the Tennessee Valley.
