Before you pick those “pretty red berries”… here’s what you need to know.

Wineberry may look like a delicious foraging find, but it’s actually an invasive shrub that spreads aggressively into forests, field edges, and backyards across Indiana.

Wineberry forms dense thickets that crowd out native plants, reduce wildlife habitat, and make it harder for birds, pollinators, and small mammals to find the food and shelter they rely on. Once it gets established, it spreads aggressively and becomes difficult to remove.

The good news is that you don’t have to give up delicious homegrown berries to make a better choice for your yard. Indiana has several native berry‑producing shrubs that support wildlife, stay in balance with local ecosystems, and still give you that yummy summer harvest.

Make sure each species is native to your county by searching it here👉https://plants.sc.egov.usda.gov/

Small planting choices at home really do add up. Choosing native berry shrubs helps protect Indiana’s natural areas while giving you a healthier, more resilient landscape.
