So lets talk about the fire last night, or the aftermath to be exact . You know when you used to get dvds and there’s the extras, like behind the scenes how it was made? Well here’s all the “extras “no one sees or thinks about after a fire….
First , half of the counties 12 fire departments were on scene, 14 units in all, pumpers, brush trucks, and tankers hauling water. Now it’s 3:30 am and we all return to our respective stations, but wait, have to refuel all these trucks first, then there’s the equipment that was used, it needs to be cleaned, air packs changed and filled, and so on…
Now as for us , since the fire was in our district and we were first on scene, our Engine 1203 was the primary attack unit deploying 3 attack lines and a supply line for tankers to pump water to the engine, a total of 800’ of hose used. As well as our K 12 saw , roof ladder, attic ladder, miscellaneous hooks , axes , etc… Before returning it all gets broken down and rolled up , loaded on the rig . We got back to the house at 4 ish.
After a few hours sleep it’s a new day and guess what? All that hose needs to be washed and dried and put back on the rig ( we carry extra in case of other calls) as well as the equipment used needs to be checked and cleaned, which takes several hours, and you might as well check all the other trucks in the station to see what decided to” break” while its just sitting there… did I forget to mention we all have families and jobs and hobbies and we are all VOLUNTEERS?
So there’s the “ making of a structure fire “ 🔥 all the things people don’t see or hear about after we respond to and emergency in Bosque County. And I should mention that as I’m writing this , Walnut Springs, Meridian and Iredell Vfd’s are fighting a large grass fire , after being up most of the night and doing all the things above, they are back out helping or citizens! And afterwards they will repeat the process above tonight and into tomorrow…
So there’s next time you see any of our dedicated fire departments in the county at work, think of this and think , how can I help them , because the next time the call goes out, it could be you!
