🚴‍♂️ Parents: Is Your Child’s E-Bike Legal? 🚴‍♀️
Our department has recently seen an influx of calls related to e-bikes and electric mopeds/motorcycles. Please take a moment to make sure your child’s ride is legal and safe.
Not every “e-bike” is considered a bicycle under North Carolina law.
👉 If it has a motor over 750 watts, can go faster than 20 mph on motor power alone, or does not have pedals, it could be considered a moped. If it travels greater than 30 mph it could be considered a motor vehicle/motorcycle.
That means:
✅ A driver’s license with motorcycle endorsement is required
✅ Registration, insurance, and inspection are required
✅ Riding is limited to streets only (no sidewalks, bike lanes, or greenways)
✅Helmets are required
✅ Violations could result in state motor vehicle infractions.
👨‍👩‍👧 Parent Tips:
• No pedals = moped/motorcycle
• Check your child’s bike motor wattage and top speed
• Require helmets every ride
• Talk with your kids about the rules of the road
Your child’s safety and your family’s responsibility start with knowing the law.

**Important Message from The Town of Kure Beach**

Citizens –
While Hurricane Erin is continuing to track away from town there are a few concerns that we should be aware of:

There continues to be a change for Tropical Storm Force winds tomorrow. Ensure that you have reviewed your property and secured anything that may cause a problem to you or your neighbors today.

Large swells have begun to create hazardous surf conditions. Multiple ocean rescues have occurred already throughout New Hanover County. Use caution on the beach for the next few days and be aware that rip currents present a significant hazard throughout the next few days.

The Kure Beach Fire Department wants to remind everyone that safety remains our top priority as Hurricane Erin moves along the coast over the next few days. Hurricane Erin will produce very large surf and dangerous rip currents, and everyone visiting the beach should do so with extreme caution.

We have removed 4 out of our 10 lifeguard stands in order to prevent them from washing away over the next couple of days due to the high surf and large swell but have a plan in place to ensure the areas without stands are fully covered. We have a full staff throughout the week and into the weekend, and lifeguards will attempt to keep people out of the water as best they can. Lifeguard towers still remain between N Ave and E Ave. If you witness someone in distress, immediately call 911 with an accurate location and the Ocean Rescue and Fire Department will respond accordingly.

All town departments have completed preparations and are ready to respond to any issues as they occur.

Respectfully –
David W. Heglar, PE

**Important Message from the Town of Kure Beach**
Residents,

It is extremely important to not push water into neighbors homes by driving fast through water covered roads. Please do not drive around any road closures. Driving through deep water is extremely dangerous and should be avoided. Even a small amount of water can cause a vehicle to lose control or stall. Just six inches of water can be enough to cause a loss of control and potentially stall many passenger vehicles. If you are in doubt, just remain where you are and wait until the water recedes. If you drive through water and your car loses power, call 911.

The Public Works Department is checking to make sure all storm water systems are clear and will be out ensuring the systems are working as designed.

Thank you,
Mayor Pro Tem David Heglar
Emergency Manager
