Water sampling for E. coli was conducted yesterday. Based on the results, all sampled beaches (listed below) are SAFE for swimming:

- First Sands
- Zeba Boat Launch
- Head of the Bay
- Sand Point: Campground (Bucks Marina)
- Sand Point Recreational Trail
- Assinins Beach

When visiting any beach or camping area, please remember to follow the “Leave No Trace” principle by taking out what you brought in.

Below are at a Caution ⚠️ for swiming due to slightly elevated results, resampling will continue until it is deemed safe.

WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY
As the harvesting seasons approach the NRD would like to remind the community to be safe.

Be sure to wear hunter’s orange anytime you enter the woods. Stay alert and aware anytime you step off a road or trail. Make sure someone knows where you are going and when you’ll be back. Get to know the landscape and the boundaries of ownership near you. Always keep an eye out for all critters, be it wolves, ticks, racoons, cougars, or moose, staying alert and calm will keep you safe.

Practice honorable harvest and sustainable management, respect yourself, others, and all orders of creation. Speaking to other hunters, landowners, and community-members can go a long way in supporting a successful hunt. We all enjoy this place we call home and this way of life it gives us, lets do our best to support it for generations to come.

Visit the Licensing office at the Tribal Center to get your Non-Commercial Fishing, Hunting, Trapping & Gathering License. For anyone under 18 you will be required to submit proof you’ve completed a hunter’s safety course.

In early August the Superior Watershed Partnership assisted the Department with deploying two buoys in the bay that will help address local and regional needs. They aim to advance and expand technology throughout the region: to better understand the lakes, and to better inform the public of risks to life and property.

Notice is hereby given that Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) will accept sealed bids for Environmental Cleanup according to the specifications prepared by TriMedia.

The scope of work includes: Environmental cleanup activities, including the excavation of impacted soil for landfill disposal, demolition of two structures for landfill disposal, and collection and disposal of miscellaneous solid waste on the surface, topsoil, and seed and mulch.

A Mandatory Pre-Bid Meeting and site tour are scheduled for August 28, 2026. Bidders will meet at the Assinins site, located at 14791 Assinins Road, Baraga, Michigan 49908. Following the pre-bid meeting will be a walk-through of the project areas. The pre-bid meeting will begin at 10:00AM EDT. The pre-bid meeting is mandatory for prospective bidders. Failure to attend will result
in a CONTRACTOR’s bid being rejected as non-responsive.

Bids are to be submitted as provided within the Contract Documents and will be accepted until 4:00 PM EDT on September 20, 2026. Bids submitted after this time will not be accepted. Incomplete Bid Packages will be considered non-responsive.
