♟The Apprentice is now the Sith Lord. Congrats to Larsen Winger for getting the chess coach position at LCHS. I'm proud to pass the torch to such a warrior. I'll still serve as the team treasurer/ mentor and will also give him admin to this page. All he has to do is post once a year and that's already twice as much as I did. Some might remember Larsen as playing 1.e3 2.Qf3 or board 5 at state. Wasn't long after that that he became board 1 and a 1.d4 2.c4 monster. Now he's responsible for nurturing the next batch of patzers. Join me in rejoicing this triumph and tag anyone I miss. Another 1st place in our Portland division. Next up: State this Friday and Saturday. Last time we had a 6-team tie for 11th place overall with 13 points. While some of the teams that will be there are looking tougher this year, I think we have a solid team that will fight every match out to the end.

Congrats to the top 3 finishers at the 2017 La Center Chess Open:
1. Chase 5-0
2. Loren 4-1 (only loss to Chase)
3. James Carmona 3-2 (Had to beat out Corden from Skyview in a blitz match. Wasn't pretty, but it got the job done.)

Cody Alexander Cumbra final chess rating= 1016 (40 games). Timothy Smith's current chess rating= 1015 (37 games). Will Tim usurp the usurper before the season is over? (I can't tag Tim but will tag Chase Michael Jamieson and Allen Smith.. maybe they can). Also, Aidan seems to have left Facebook- but I'm sure he'd want to be aware of this moment.

Loren: 2-0
Ben: 1-1
Larsen: 0-2
Tim: 2-0
Jack: 2-0

With just two rounds to go in Leuven- no one will be able to catch Carlsen. That leaves him with a 2nd place finish in Paris, 1st in Leuven.. unfortunately, he won't be able to defend his 2015 Grand Chess Tour title since he will have to miss the Sinquefield Cup as he will be preparing for the 2016 World Championship match. The London Classic is in December so he should be able to attend there, and who knows, maybe if he wins the London Classic and enough math works in his favor, he might still win the 2016 Grand Chess Tour even without playing the Sinquefield Cup (probably not though):
