It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Drama teacher from SOTA 1 La Crosse and Hamilton Elementary School, Mr. Kim Nofsinger. After a short and courageous battle with cancer, he has passed away peacefully.

Kim was a valued member of our school community who touched the lives of many students, families, and colleagues. His kindness, dedication, and care for students will be deeply missed.

We know this news may be difficult for our school community, and we will be supporting our students and staff as we navigate this loss together. We encourage families to give children space to process their feelings and to reach out if they need additional support.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Kim's family, loved ones, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Some people are just really good at making you feel like you belong. That’s Hamilton/SOTA I.

Today, we had the absolute pleasure of joining this incredible crew for their first-day tradition: the smiles, the music, the hugs, the high-fives, the red carpet, and a whole lot of cheering as students arrived for their new school year.

You could feel it everywhere. Students felt welcomed. Families felt included. Staff felt connected. And for a few wonderful moments, everyone felt like part of one big, happy, extended family.

That feeling doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from a team of people who know their students, love what they do, and bring genuine joy to the work of caring for kids and serving their community.

It’s the spirit of Hamilton/SOTA I. And it’s a beautiful way to start a school year.

To this amazing team, thank you for showing our students and families what belonging feels like. And to all of our fantabulous La Crosse students, families, and staff - welcome back!

The 2026–27 school year is officially underway at Northside Elementary/Coulee Montessori!

One building. Two schools. All heart. While most of our district starts tomorrow, these amazing students and staff were ready to go today.

There’s something special happening inside this building. Students are known, welcomed, challenged, encouraged, and cared for. Staff build the kind of connections that make a school feel like a community, and they show up every day with a deep commitment to serving kids.

To our Northside and Coulee Montessori families, thank you for trusting us with your children. They are in wonderful hands.

And to the incredible staff who make this place so special, thank you for filling these halls with kindness, curiosity, and heart.

Here’s to a fantastic year. Welcome back, Northside and Coulee Montessori!

All of our School District of La Crosse staff came together today for our annual Welcome Back Celebration. We cheered for colleagues celebrating 25 years with the district. There was hula hooping. Some prizes and surprises. And we got to spend a little time together before this school year kicks into high gear.

But the best part was looking around that room. Nearly 1,000 people who bring so much experience, different talents, big ideas, and all the heart to our schools. People who will spend the year helping kids learn, find what they’re good at, try something new, figure out who they are, and who they might become.

That’s a pretty awesome group of people. Put all of that know-how, talent, and care together and you have the kind of team that can help kids do remarkable things.

To our staff: thank you for all you bring to this work, all you give to it, and for always doing what's best for kids. We’re beyond lucky to be a part of this crew, and we’re excited to rock this year together.

Today marks the beginning of something special.

Please join us in welcoming the newest members of our family! From first-year educators stepping into their classrooms for the very first time to experienced educators beginning a new chapter, we’re so glad you’re here.

You’re not just starting a new job. You’re becoming part of something bigger, a community of educators who show up every day to help La Crosse kids learn, grow, discover who they are, and find their place in the world.

Today, you begin your legacy in La Crosse Public Education. We can’t wait to see all the ways you’ll make a difference.

Welcome to the crew.

For one quarter, learning looked a little different at La Crosse Polytechnic School.

Students researched local history. They interviewed business owners and community members. They learned to write scripts, operate cameras, and edit documentaries. Along the way, they built confidence, solved real problems, and discovered that some of the best stories are right here in La Crosse.

This behind-the-scenes video captures our first partnership with PBS Wisconsin Education Youth Media and the months-long journey that challenged students to become historians, filmmakers, and storytellers while seeing their community through a new lens.

Thank you to Jennifer Kobylecky, Nick Ostrem, Ian Glodich, and the entire PBS Wisconsin Education team for your time, expertise, and unwavering support. Thank you to the many local businesses, organizations, and community members who opened your doors, shared your stories, and made this experience possible for our students.

We're proud of the documentaries our students created. Even more, we're proud of the confidence, curiosity, and connections they built along the way.

The next chapter begins.

Tonight, our Board of Education had the opportunity to tour the recently donated Reuben Trane Building and see the space that will help shape new opportunities for students, staff, and our community.

Our Buildings and Grounds team has already been hard at work assessing the property, and we're excited to share that the building is in excellent condition as we begin planning for its future use.

We're incredibly grateful to Trane Technologies for this extraordinary gift and the possibilities it creates for generations of learners. There's plenty of work ahead, and we're excited to continue sharing the journey as this space is thoughtfully transformed into a place that supports learning, connection, and community.

This is just the beginning.

Our referendum projects continue to make great progress as crews stay busy preparing for the new school year and moving work forward at both State Road Elementary, the future home of Pammel Creek Elementary, and the new Hogan Elementary.

At State Road, the gymnasium flooring and new windows are being installed, while interior finishes such as tile, carpet, and brickwork continue to take shape. At Hogan, steel is rising throughout the classroom wing, masonry work is underway, and the geothermal system has been installed as construction continues.

Thank you for your continued support as we create learning spaces that will serve our students and community for years to come.
