Today, we pause to honor and remember one of our own — Firefighter Ken Caldwell - on the 2nd Anniversary of his untimely passing in the line of duty.

Ken was more than a firefighter. He was a brother, a friend, and the kind of man whose wisdom, humor, and dedication left a lasting mark on everyone he met. Whether he was cracking a well-timed joke, guiding us with his years of experience, or expertly keeping our apparatus and equipment running like clockwork, Ken led with heart and humility.

His impact went beyond the firehouse. In the moments following his passing, our LaCrosse community wrapped us in love and support, reminding us of the strength that surrounds us. That warmth — your prayers, messages, and presence — brought light to our grief. It reminded us that in this brotherhood, no one stands alone.

Ken is with the Lord now, and while his boots may be empty, his legacy remains. In every well-oiled engine, in every shared laugh, and in every act of service, we carry him with us, always.

Continue to watch over us brother, we miss you.

Today, we were able to convoy down to Hoosier Burn Camp at Camp Tecumseh with the Red Knights, 1-800-BoardUp NW Indiana and other area departments. The annual Summer Camp, this the 28th year, provides an unforgettable experience for young burn survivors, filled with exciting activities and meaningful connections in a safe, supportive environment.

One of the highlights of the camp is Visitors Day, today, where family, friends, supporters, and first responders come together to celebrate the resilience and growth of the campers! Friday, we held a Boot Drive where so many of you were generous to stop and donate.

In a check ceremony after lunch, because of your incredible donations FOR THE KIDS, we were able to donate $3,717.20 to Hoosier Burn Camp for the future success of their inspiring Camp! We thank for your continued support - not just of us - but for the causes that mean so much to us!

Every year, National EMS Week recognizes the dedication of emergency medical services professionals across the nation. We're constantly thankful for the excellent service provided to us from our partners at La Porte County Emergency Medical Service! Yesterday, one of our own was honored in a ceremony kicking off this celebratory week.

LT/EMT Scott Kleckner, 1004, was chosen as the 2026 LaPorte County EMS David A Harness First Responder of the Year. Nominated by Paramedic Stacy Coulter for his efforts on March 1st, 2026 when a resident and retired LCVFD veteran suffered a cardiac arrest. Scott arrived and applied our LUCAS device (Health Foundation of La Porte grant), delivered one AED shock, and began "bagging" or breathing for the patient. Dispatch would later confirm that Scott arrived 4 minutes after the 911 call was placed, providing the shock just a mere 3 minutes later (verified by radio transmissions).

In her nomination letter, PM Coulter noted "our first responders leave their families and respond out of deep love for their community. "The Perfect Storm" was Scott's quick response and his ability to perform what he's been trained to do, if without this would have ended in the worst way possible." The patient regained a pulse and after 19 days, he walked out of the hospital where he continues to recover alongside his family today.

As always, we are extremely grateful and we stand ready to serve you. Please have your friends and family certified in CPR! Let us congratulate Scott on being the LaPorte County First Responder of the Year!

We can’t say enough about the incredible work the LaPorte County E911 dispatchers do! It’s a job that often goes without praise, but make no mistake they are the GOLDEN GLUE that holds the emergency services world together. Happy TC week to you all!

This is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, a time to pause and recognize the important work telecommunicators do in delivering critical, life-saving public safety services to our communities.

They are the unseen voices who answer the call when someone is afraid, hurt, in danger, or in desperate need of help. They gather vital information, dispatch first responders, provide critical instructions, and help bring order to chaos in moments of crisis.

They also look out for the welfare of the first responders they send – monitoring calls, relaying urgent information, and watching over them from beginning to end.

Though they are seldom seen, their work is indispensable. We are grateful for their skill, their composure, and their unwavering commitment to both the public and those who respond in harm’s way.

During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, we honor and thank all who serve in this vital role.
