State Road Elementary School State Road Elementary... where it's a great day to be a star! State Road Elementary is uniquely located off State Highway 33 in Greenwald Coulee.

Nestled at the base of one of La Crosse’s many beautiful bluffs, a five acre setting provides a picturesque learning environment. Our natural setting provides our students access to nature trails, an outdoor classroom, Strye Nature Center Center, and Chad Erickson Memorial Park. Annually, State Road ranks among the top elementary schools academically while taking great pride in developing the whole child.

At State Road Elementary School, our second graders are learning that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

Through the Kindhearted Kids project, students “adopt” a stuffed pet to help build responsibility, empathy, and care for others. This year, the learning grew even bigger through a partnership with the Coulee Region Humane Society.

Each student was paired with a real animal awaiting adoption and wrote heartfelt letters from the pet’s perspective to help the pet find a forever home. The kids researched animals, practiced writing skills, built confidence, and strengthened connections with their community.

Students shared their letters with volunteer Deb and her dog Belle before delivering them to the humane society. Deb also visits our schools regularly to read with students, showing how strong community connections help learning come alive for kids every day.

Projects like this help students grow into compassionate, responsible citizens who care for people, animals, their community, and themselves.

This is what makes the School District of La Crosse such a special place to learn and work. Real experiences. Caring adults. Meaningful connections. Great things happen every day here.
