What a year for the La Crosse Central High School Track Hawks! 🏁🏆

In their very first season in the Build Moto Mentor Program - a hands-on program that helps students build trade and life skills through motorcycle fabrication - six Central students took on an incredible challenge: transforming a Harley-Davidson X350 into a competitive flat-track race bike while spending months in the shop turning ideas into reality, solving problems together, managing a budget, documenting their work, and seeing firsthand what it takes to bring a project from concept to competition.

The results speak for themselves:

🏍️ 1st place in the Dyno Competition for gaining the most horsepower from stock
🏍️ 1st place in their heat races
🏍️ 3rd place in the main event
🏍️ 1st place in the Brewtown Rumble Mechanics Competition
🏍️ Overall winners of the 2026 BUILD Moto Cup

The experience connected students with skilled mentors, local businesses, and industry professionals who shared their time, talents, and passion. These unique opportunities help students discover new interests, build confidence, and see what’s possible for their future.

A huge thank you to teacher Doug Dammen for leading the team, mentors Aaron Nicks and Matt Schmidt for the countless hours invested in our students, Tony Ciano for teaching students wrap skills to make the bike look awesome, and Ethan and Dave Ebben for racing the bike at the Beaver Cycle Club.

We’re also grateful to Driftless AMCA, S&S Cycle, Inc., Independent Cycle and ATV, Powersports Tuning Specialist, AMCustom LLC, and Great River Harley-Davidson for supporting this inaugural season.

Congratulations to the Track Hawks on an unforgettable rookie year!

For 104 years, the Memorial Day Observance at La Crosse Central High School has brought students, staff, veterans, families, and community members together to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

This morning, students experienced the meaning of Memorial Day through music, reflection, service, and stories from those who have served. From the Color Guard and Flag Corps to performances by the Robed Choir, Band, and Chamber Orchestra, students played an important role in carrying on one of the nation’s longest-running high school Memorial Day traditions.

We were honored to welcome keynote speaker Jennifer Schmaltz, a La Crosse native and Central graduate, who dedicated more than 20 years of service to the United States Army Nurse Corps. Schmaltz retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving in leadership roles across Combat Support Hospitals and Medical Centers throughout her military career.

Opportunities like this leave a lasting impact on students and staff. They help young people build empathy, gratitude, respect, and a stronger connection to their community and country. We are proud to continue a tradition that honors the fallen while helping the next generation understand the importance of service and remembrance.
