The Sheriff’s Office Mourns the Loss of a True Public Servant

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office joins countless others in mourning the loss of Ted C. Harris, who passed away on July 9, 2026.
Ted’s legacy cannot be measured by a single title because he held so many. He was an educator who influenced generations of students. Serving the community with the Sheriff’s Office, Ted wore the hat of Deputy Sheriff and later Evidence Specialist for many great years.
Ted’s dedication to the fire service extended far beyond our community. Ted was a founding member of the Vernon County Hazardous Materials Response Team and helped train firefighters throughout Wisconsin as a fire service instructor.
Ted’s commitment to preparing others ensured that countless firefighters and emergency responders were better equipped to serve their own communities.
The remarkable thing about Ted was not simply what he accomplished—it was how he carried those accomplishments. Ted never sought recognition, never wanted praise, and was never comfortable being the center of attention. If anything, Ted would have preferred that the focus remain on the people around him. Despite the countless lives he touched and the honors he received, Ted remained one of the most humble people you could ever meet. Ted served because it was the right thing to do, not because he expected anything in return. Whether in a classroom, on a wrestling mat, on the fire ground, in a patrol car, or mentoring the next generation of first responders, he led with unwavering dedication. His steady presence left an impression that cannot be measured by awards or titles.
Legacies like Ted’s are rare. His absence will be deeply felt throughout Vernon County, across Wisconsin, and among all who had the absolute privilege of knowing him.
Sheriff Roy Torgerson, Chief Deputy Matthew Sutton, and every member of the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office extend our deepest condolences to Ted’s family, friends, former colleagues, students, and the many communities he served so faithfully.
Thank you, Ted, for showing us the greatest leaders are often the humblest among us. Your example will continue to guide us, and you will never be forgotten.
