ATTENTION ALL CANDIDATES FOR ELECTIVE OFFICE IN OLDHAM COUNTY
The General Election in Oldham County will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
Although there is no specific date established by law for election campaigns to begin, candidates traditionally begin placing campaign signs whenever they believe it is appropriate for their campaigns.
In response to concerns and complaints voiced during the May Primary Election, and in an effort to ensure fairness and consistency for all candidates, the Oldham County sign ordinance will be enforced according to its terms between June 3, 2026 and September 2, 2026.
Because the Oldham County Code Enforcement Officer is a candidate for elective office in the November election, he will not participate in the enforcement of regulations relating to political campaign signs. He will continue to perform all other normal duties of his office, including the enforcement of regulations pertaining to commercial signage.
Complaints regarding improperly placed political signs may be submitted to the Oldham County Planning and Development Office. Complaints determined to involve a violation of the ordinance will be referred to the Oldham County Police Department for appropriate action.
The following regulations will be enforced between June 3 and September 2:
1. Signs Allowed Without a Permit
• Temporary wall signs of two (2) square feet or less and temporary freestanding signs of six (6) square feet or less are permitted without a sign permit.
• A maximum of one sign per road frontage is permitted without a permit.
2. Signs Requiring a Permit
• Any political sign larger than six (6) square feet requires a permit issued by the Oldham County Planning and Development Office.
• Permit applications must be signed by both the candidate and the property owner on whose property the sign will be placed.
3. Permit Duration and Frequency
• Sign permits are valid for thirty (30) days.
• No more than one permit per property may be issued during any calendar quarter.
4. Permit Fees
• County ordinance requires a permit fee of $2.00 per square foot for signs requiring a permit.
5. Public Right-of-Way
• Political signs are not permitted at any time within a public right-of-way.
• Signs located within a public right-of-way will be removed and/or subject to enforcement action.
As has been the customary practice in Oldham County, beginning September 3, 2026, permit fees for political signs will be waived and the sign ordinance will not be strictly enforced for political campaign signs through Election Day.
Candidates and property owners are encouraged to review sign placement carefully to ensure compliance and avoid unnecessary enforcement actions.
