At approx 213 pm today we were toned out to a reported structure fire. Arrival of our Deputy Chief found an out building on fire with lots of debris and junk vehicles and weeds. The wind had just picked blowing very hard to the North pushing the fire toward a couple of residents and other property. Crews began a quick attack trying to slow down the fire progression. Due to lack of fire hydrants in the close proximity, mutual aid was requested for water tenders from Rocky Ford Fire, Cheraw Fire, Bent County Fire Department, and Manzanola Fire. Crews worked quick and fast to keep the fire contained to the original property. Multiple personnel from all the departments worked great together to bring the fire under control. Thanks to OCSO, Otero Emergency Management, Otero Road and Bridge and other citizens help direct traffic and such. Thanks to Southeast Power to check power lines. The cause is under investigation. At approx 108 am this morning LJFD responded to the area of Hwy 194 and BB.75 for a reported brush fire. Upon arrival of Brush 1, they reported a large fire moving North on the North side of Hwy 194. Heavy brush and tamarisks and a small breeze was pushing the fire. Two houses were evacuated as a precaution by rd 31.80 and Hwy 194. Mutual aid was requested from Cheraw Fire, Rocky Ford Fire and Bent County Fire. OCSO helped with traffic and with evacuation of the houses. Crews on the North end made sure the houses were protected from the fire. All other crews battled the fire and tough terrain. Crews finally brought the fire under control and worked hot spots and all were back in service at approx 515 am. Thank you to everyone who assisted. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Approx 90 acres burned.
