Students entering sixth grade at Mattawoman Middle School on Aug. 24 got a sneak peek of the school Aug. 12 during a sixth-grade boot camp.
The school routinely holds the activity each summer to give soon-to-be sixth graders a chance to familiarize themselves with routines and what to expect as middle school students.
The boot camp enlisted the help of teachers and incoming seventh- and eighth-grade students to show the younger kids the ropes. Teachers went over how to decipher a middle school schedule, including the difference between A days and B days, and what codes like S1 and S2 mean (they mean Semester 1 and Semester 2).
Students were briefed on study skills and tips, tried to crack the code of opening a locker secured with a combination lock and toured the school with the help of a scavenger hunt that sent them off in search of “This place may make your day, especially if you like to play,” and “Find me if you DARE. I’m a great resource here …” Staff led a presentation on the importance of self-advocacy, went over expectations for students and introduced the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program at Mattawoman.
The first day of school for Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students in kindergarten through Grade 12 is Monday, Aug. 24. Find back-to-school information at www.ccboe.com.
