undel and Prince George's Counties. The SMSC is divided into two groups of materials:

Our Documents Room houses hundreds of unique collections of personal papers, local business and organizational records, photographic material, rare books, maps, architectural drawings, and oral histories. Our Maryland Collection contains printed and published materials, including books, periodicals, newsletters, microfilm, and vertical files. Our microfilm collection includes and federal census records, land holdings, and church records, among other subjects. The SMSC was founded by the College of Southern Maryland in 1976 in order to provide a central location for research on this historically rich region. It is open to students, historians, genealogists, and all members of the public. The content here does not necessarily reflect the thoughts or opinions of the College of Southern Maryland (CSM). Our Story

The Southern Maryland Studies Center (SMSC), located on the La Plata campus of the College of Southern Maryland (CSM), is an archive and research center that seeks to collect, preserve, and provide access to materials that document the history and culture of Southern Maryland, an area encompassing Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's Counties, together with the southern portions of Anne Arundel and Prince George's Counties.

The SMSC was founded by the College of Southern Maryland in 1976 in order to provide a central location for research on this historically rich region. It is open to researchers, students, historians, genealogists, and all members of the public.

The SMSC is divided into two groups of materials: Our Archives houses hundreds of unique collections of personal papers, local business and organizational records, photographic material, rare books, maps, architectural drawings, and oral histories. Our Maryland Collection contains printed and published materials, including reference books, periodicals, newsletters, microfilm, and vertical files. Our microfilm collection includes historical newspapers, federal census records, land holdings, and church records, among other subjects. General Information: The SMSC's Maryland Collection and Documents Room operate on different schedules. The Maryland Collection follows the hours of the CSM La Plata campus library. You can find its current operating hours on the CSM website. The Archives is open on a more limited basis. We ask that researchers E-mail or call to make an appointment prior to their visit so that we may prepare the materials they wish to view beforehand.
