In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

President Donald J. Trump has ordered the United States Flag lowered to half-staff, from sunrise to sunset, on Friday, May 15, 2026 in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

In May 2026, 363 law enforcement officers had their names added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C..

* 2026 Additions: The 363 names added included 109 officers who died in the line of duty in 2025, along with 254 officers from previous years whose stories were recently verified.
* Total Names: Following these additions, the memorial contains over 24,000 names of fallen officers.

The La Plata Police Department honors those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice protecting and serving our nation; and we keep their families in our thoughts.
