Congratulations goes out to the La Vernia Police Department and the first responders for receiving 1st Place Nation Wide on National Night Out. This could not have happened without their dedicated service and the countless number of sponsors and volunteers.

Sales Tax Election question answered..

Yes, there are two sales tax proposition you will see on Tuesday.

The Fire Department Proposition is for Wilson County EMERGENCY service district #1. Key word is EMERGENCY. This is to support your Fire Department and to help us continue to keep property taxes low. It will also help us to staff Station 2 at FM 3432 and FM 775. If passed, the sales tax will stay right here in the district and fund the fire department.

The other proposition is the "Assistance District #1". Key word is ASSISTANCE. This is a sales tax that, if passed, will go to the county.

Voting for the entire district will be at the La Vernia City Hall. 7am to 7pm.

Please come out and support your Fire Department

11/01/2019

Burning will be allowed, for everyone and without a permit, this Friday and also on Sunday (Nov 1 and Nov 3) per the County Fire Marshall. No Burning will be allowed on Saturday due to the the wind forecast.

Almost $275,000 in grants!!!.

District 1 has worked diligently to secure grant funding to offset expenses that would otherwise be paid by taxpayers.

In the last 24 months we have received a Fire Truck Grant, a Fire Equipment grant (Extrication tools AKA Jaws of Life), Training Equipment Grant (props and books) and several grants funding the tuition for various training's.

We have our eye on several other grants and we will continue to apply for all grants that are available to us.

Sales Tax Election:
There are two different sales tax elections you will see if you are in District 1's area and choose to vote.

One is ours. It is for Wilson County EMERGENCY SERVICE DISTRICT 1. This is a 1% sales tax to support the fire department. To help distinguish between the two look for the key words... EMERGENCY SERVICE.

One is Wilson County Assistance District #1. This is a 1% sales tax that, if passed, will go to the County. Key word here is ASSISTANCE.

Both elections are independent of each other. The outcome of one election will not affect the other.

The WCESD #1 board has chosen to pursue a sales tax as they believe it is a more fair way to support the fire department. Currently the entire burden is solely on property owners through a property tax. A sales tax is on purchases made by anyone who does business within our district Those who rent, pass through or just do business in our area will now be helping support the fire department. The ESD board has lowered your property tax 6 out of 7 years. Please help them continue the trend.

The funds generated by the sales tax, if passed, will help us provide full time staffing for station #2 which is located at FM 775 and FM 3432. Currently that station is manned by one firefighter M-F from 7-5 pm. The nights and weekends are covered by volunteers from home if they are available.

BURNING WILL BE ALLOWED THIS WEEKEND!!!!!

Burning will be allowed by the County this Friday, Saturday and Sunday without a permit. That is October 18th,19th and 20th.

The BURN BAN HAS NOT BEEN LIFTED and will still be in effect on October 21st.

All fires must be out by dark. None started after 4pm.

Winter brings low humidity and higher winds. This is our most dangerous time for brush and grass fires. Everyone please be careful.

Our flags will be lowered in Honor of the Line Of Duty death of a SAFD firefighter.

District 1 along with multiple other agencies worked a 200 acre wild land fire of county road 307. Although this fire appeared accidental it’s a good reminder that the burn ban is still in effect. Thanks to District 3, District 12, District 2, New Berlin, Stockdale and Floresville for the help.

Firefighters from multiple area departments are battling a huge brush fire west of C.R. 307 near C.R. 317 in Wilson County. Support from San Antonio has recently been requested for the out-of-control

FIRE STATION 2 STAFFING IS HERE!!!
Station 2, located at 775 and FM 3432, is now staffed by one firefighter M-F 7AM-5PM. District 3 is now staffing a paramedic level Ambulance, 24/7, out of this station as well. Prior to this...the station was only staffed by volunteer FF’s. This station serves Kicaster,Legacy, The Reserve, Copper Creek, Vintage Oaks, Woodlands, Rosewood, Country Hills, Westfield, Eden Crossing, Home Place and Triple R.

If the sales tax election in November is successful we will be able to staff the station with 2 FF’s 24/7. We are asking for a 1% sales tax in the unincorporated areas of the district.

District 1 was called to the LV Primary to remove a child from the playground equipment. We normally don't post about calls like this but given the "sound" of the call and the patients age we thought it might be prudent in this situation.

First and foremost, the young lady is OK and walked off after she was removed. She got her leg wedged in between two pieces of the playground equipment. The gap between the two items was about 24 inches. A gap that you would think was nearly impossible to get anything wedged between.

The fire department was called and it took us just a minute or two to get her out by simply spreading the two plastic pieces apart by an inch or so. The school staff did a great job of attending to her prior to our arrival.

We do not believe the playground equipment is unsafe and I don't believe this scenario could be repeated if we tried again 100 times.

The young lady is in no way at fault in this. The equipment is not to blame and there was certainly nothing the staff could have done to prevent this.
