What an amazing Japanese Cultural Day!

More than 50 people joined us at the Lacey Library for an afternoon of creativity, culture, and fun!

From origami and calligraphy to games, art, and other hands-on activities, there was so much to explore—and it was wonderful to see kids, teens, and adults all joining in.

A huge thank you to Chiyo, the Japanese international students, and all of the wonderful volunteers who shared their time, talents, and culture with our community and made the day so special.

We had such a great time—and judging by these photos, we weren't the only ones!

ありがとうございました — Arigatō gozaimash*ta!

Stop by the Lacey Library to check out the United Nations Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists display!

From unric.org/ :

"Rangelands cover about half the world’s land surface. These vast ecosystems, which are home to grasslands, savannahs, wetlands, tundra and deserts, support unique biodiversity and the livelihoods of millions of pastoralists.

Pastoralists steward livestock, safeguard local and indigenous knowledge, and support food security across many ecosystems. Present in more than seventy-five per cent of countries and managing at least one quarter of the world’s land, they herd about one billion animals worldwide. Their mobile way of life protects fragile landscapes, strengthens resilience and preserves cultural heritage.

The International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists calls for greater recognition, responsible investment and adapted policies. It stresses the need to secure access to land and natural resources, support mobility and strengthen rangeland management, restoration, animal health services and fair value chains. By encouraging inclusive dialogue and cooperation, the Year aims to improve pastoralist livelihoods and advance sustainable rangeland management and the Sustainable Development Goals."

The display will be in the Lacey Library until September 5th.

🐾 A message from Hallie: 🐾

“Hi, friends! It’s Hallie. I’ll be at the Lacey Library TODAY at 2 PM, and I would really, really like some people to come visit me. (I love being around people.) ❤️

Bring a favorite story, poem, memory, joke, or just yourself! My human friends and I will spend some time reading, sharing stories, chatting, having tea & cookies, and enjoying each other’s company.

And, most importantly, I’ll be there for pets, cuddles, and general moral support.

I hope you’ll come spend the afternoon with me!”

Tomorrow at the Lacey Library!

Corsets. Bloomers. Bras. Bustles.

What do they have to do with women's freedom?

More than you might think.

Join us for Hidden Layers: Women's Undergarments and How They've Shaped Ladies' Liberties, a fascinating Humanities Washington presentation by theatrical costume designer Diane Johnston.

Through beautiful historical garments and engaging storytelling, you'll discover how changing fashions reflected—and sometimes drove—women's changing roles in society. From restrictive corsets to practical clothing that allowed women greater independence, this talk explores history from the inside out.
