🚒 MARSHALL COUNTY OLD SETTLERS WEEKEND IS HERE! 🚒

The Lacon - Sparland Fire Protection District will be out and about during Old Settlers weekend, and we hope to see everyone there! Be sure to check out the full Old Settlers schedule for all the other events, activities, exhibitors, and entertainment happening throughout the weekend!

❤️ THIS YEAR, WE'RE THROWING RINGS IN MEMORY OF RON KENYON

This year's Ring Toss will be a little more meaningful to our department as we remember former Lacon-Sparland firefighter Ron Kenyon.

Ron is the firefighter who built the Ring Toss setup into what you see and enjoy today. His work helped create an Old Settlers tradition that our department and community have continued to enjoy year after year.

In Ron's memory, a memorial plaque will be permanently placed on the Ring Toss, allowing his contribution to this tradition to be remembered for years to come.

So when you stop by and throw a few rings this weekend, help us throw one for Ron. ❤️🚒

A big thank you to the Lacon Rehab and Nursing staff for their quick actions and for safely evacuating all residents prior to our arrival. We would also like to recognize the facility’s maintenance staff, who provided valuable assistance to firefighters throughout the incident and helped with facility operations during and after the fire.

We'd also like to add an additional thanks to the Daughters of St. Francis - American Region for allowing the temporary use of their building to hold the residents during the incident.

07/30/2026 Garbage Truck Contents Fire

This incident serves as an important reminder to properly dispose of hazardous materials and chemical containers. Items such as chemicals, oily or solvent-soaked rags, pool chemicals, batteries, fireworks, propane cylinders, aerosol cans, hot ashes, and other potentially reactive or flammable materials should never be placed in household garbage unless specifically permitted by local disposal guidelines. When in doubt, contact your local waste disposal provider for guidance on proper disposal methods. Taking a few extra minutes to dispose of these materials safely can help prevent fires and protect your family, sanitation workers, and the community.

🚒 Welcome Rescue 3 to the Lacon - Sparland Fire Protection District 🚒

We are excited to officially introduce the newest addition to our fleet: Rescue 3, a 2012 KME Predator rescue engine that has replaced our former Engine 3, a 2010 International/Alexis. Rescue 3 was purchased from Command Fire Apparatus LLC - Used Fire Trucks in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, who accepted our previous Engine 3 as a trade-in. Our former Engine 3 has since found a new home in West Virginia, where it will continue serving another community.

Originally built for the East Farmington Volunteer Fire Department in Connecticut, this truck now begins its next chapter serving the residents and visitors of the Lacon-Sparland Fire Protection District.

Rescue 3 Specifications
• 2012 KME Predator
• 1,250 GPM pump
• 750-gallon water tank
• Seating for 7 firefighters and 4 3M Scott airpak seats

Fire Suppression Equipment
• Key Hose attack lines
• Two 200-foot 1¾-inch preconnected attack lines
• One 2½-inch preconnected attack line
• One 150-foot 1½-inch front bumper preconnect
• Remote-controlled Task Force Tips deck gun (master stream)

Rescue & Specialty Equipment
• AMKUS Rescue Systems dewalt electric extrication tools
• Extensive vehicle rescue equipment
• DEWALT cordless hand tools and additional specialty tools
• 12,000-pound, 80-foot winch with mounting capability on all four sides of the apparatus
• Telescoping scene light tower
• Retractable side awning for incident operations
• CMC: Rescue, Safety, Access Rope rescue equipment
• Ice rescue equipment
• Grain bin rescue equipment (coming soon)

EMS & Command Features
• Trauma and triage equipment
• Two ballistic vests for responder safety
• Rear cab command desk for incident management
• Mini refrigerator to help keep firefighters hydrated during extended incidents

This apparatus significantly enhances our ability to respond to a wide variety of emergencies, including structure fires, vehicle accidents, technical rescues, rope rescues, ice rescues, agricultural emergencies, and many other incidents throughout our district and surrounding communities.

We would like to thank Command Fire Apparatus for their professionalism throughout this process and for helping make this upgrade possible.

🇺🇸 Happy Independence Day from the Lacon-Sparland Fire Protection District! 🇺🇸

Today we celebrate 250 years of American independence and the freedoms that make our nation great. As you enjoy time with family and friends, we ask everyone to celebrate safely.

🎆 If you're using fireworks:
• Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby.
• Never allow children to light or handle fireworks.
• Light only one firework at a time and never relight a "dud."
• Keep fireworks away from homes, vehicles, dry grass, and other flammable materials.

🍔 While grilling:
• Keep your grill away from structures and anything that can burn.
• Never leave a hot grill unattended.

If an emergency happens, don't hesitate to call 911.

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy every day and will never be forgotten.

As we spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, let us also take a moment to reflect on those who made the ultimate sacrifice and the families who continue to carry that loss.

We are saddened to share the passing of former firefighter Ron Keyon, who lost his courageous battle with ALS.

Ron proudly served out of the Sparland Fire Station for 27 years, dedicating much of that time in various Captain roles. He was a respected leader, mentor, and friend, someone who could always be counted on when it mattered most. His commitment to the department and the community he served will not be forgotten.

Beyond the fire service, Ron was a dedicated farmer and was deeply involved in the community. Whether he was helping a neighbor, supporting local efforts, or lending a hand wherever it was needed, Ron embodied what it truly meant to serve others.

Ron’s strength was evident both on and off the fireground, and he faced his battle with ALS with the same courage and determination that defined his years of service.

Please keep Ron’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him in your thoughts and prayers.
