Once Lake Ralph Hall is open for the public use, the lake will include three public access points with boat ramps, as well as public fishing jetty (more info and a map here: https://lakeralphhall.com/recreation/). Careful consideration was taken to ensure that the ramps are long enough to be accessible as much as possible. Parking is being planned for each of these access points. Texas Parks and Wildlife recently stocked an additional 50,000 Lone Star bass fingerlings in the North Sulphur River channel for future fishing. Lake Ralph Hall, Texas' newest reservoir, is beginning to hold water! The Leon Hurse Dam and spillway are nearing completion, allowing the outlet works to be closed and the lake to start filling. Work continues on the Visitor Center, boat ramps and other amenities. How long will it take for the lake to fill? It depends on rainfall, but could be 3 to 5 years. The Highway 34 trailhead parking lot is complete and open to the public. The lot includes approximately 22 parking spaces and provides access to the pedestrian trail across the new SH 34 Bridge, pictured below. It will also provide additional parking for the future visitor center. Work on the visitor center’s foundation will begin later this fall.

that Upper Trinity Regional Water District already provides public hunting access to over 1,150 acres of land adjacent to the future for hunting through a cooperative agreement with the Texas Parks and Wildlife’s public hunting program? This is what a zig-zag weir looks like: the unique, concrete dam feature that sits at the top of the spillway. The zig-zag shape will help naturally and safely control the release of water from the lake once it is full.

Check out this 1-year-old Florida bass that will eventually call home! This fish was stocked in 2025 at a nearby pond through our partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Toyota ShareLunker Program, with plans underway to add more fingerlings to the main river channel late this spring or early summer. In addition to bass, the lake will also offer black and white crappie, channel and blue catfish, sunfish, bluegill, threadfin and gizzard shad. Randy Sliger with UTRWD has a unique job: working as the day-in, day-out project manager for the construction crews. Randy started working with UTRWD in June of 1995, and he has been responsible for keeping the large lake project moving forward smoothly.
