When the power goes out in winter, the cold can be deadly--but even without power, there are still ways to warm things up. Closing blinds and curtains and closing room doors can help contain heat, and stuffing towels in the cracks under doors can help keep the warmth in. Don’t forget about eating and staying hydrated - food provides energy to warm the body.

The halls of Hawkins are quieter now,
Though the engines stand ready and tall.
We carry the weight of a heavy goodbye
For the man who answered the call.

Brian wasn't just a name on a badge,
Or a voice on the radio line;
He was the grit in the smoke, the calm in the dark,
The heart of the Hawkins design.

He taught us that courage isn't the lack
Of the fears that the fire can bring,
But standing together, shoulder to shoulder,
Ready for everything.

So rest now, Chief, your shift is through,
The legacy’s safe in our hands.
We’ll take it from here, with the lessons you left,
As the pride of the Hawkins lands.

Every three years, EMTs and EMRs (first responders) are required to complete state-approved continuing education to maintain licensure. This isn’t just a lecture or a quick review. It includes hands-on skill verification, updated medical guidelines, scenario-based training, and competency checks to ensure we are practicing current, evidence-based emergency medicine.

For EMTs, that means 40 hours of structured training.
For EMRs, 16 hours.

Last weekend, a group of EMRs and EMTs dedicated their entire weekend to this training. The EMRs completed all of their required hours, and the EMTs completed the first 20 hours, with 20 more to finish at the end of the month.

The photos you’re seeing aren’t just classroom time. They are hands-on skill stations:

β€’ Airway management and ventilation
β€’ Cardiac monitoring and rhythm review
β€’ Spinal immobilization and helmet removal
β€’ Bleeding control and tourniquet application
β€’ Medication administration
β€’ Team-based patient scenarios

We practice these skills repeatedly so that when we walk into your home, your business, or wherever you may need us, our hands and minds already know what to do.

Training is required.
Excellence is intentional.

When you call 911 in Rusk County, you’re getting trained professionals who regularly review, practice, and test the skills that save lives.

We’re proud of this crew and the work they put in.

Some calls stay with you.

Rusk County Ambulance responded to a call involving an elderly patient who had fallen outdoors in cold conditions. When crews arrived, a community member was already on scene β€” not for recognition, but because he heard someone in distress and chose to act.

He assisted the patient, helped create safe access for responders, and stayed to help however he could until he was no longer needed. Then he returned to his work without fanfare or expectation of thanks.

That kind of awareness and willingness to help can change outcomes.

We’re proud to recognize Austin Mohr and grateful for community members who remind us that compassion, quick action, and simply paying attention truly matter.
