B Shift wrapped up our final rotation of extrication training Sunday with a challenging scenario involving a vehicle that had crashed through a trailer with trapped patients inside.

Crews worked through scene stabilization, patient access, disentanglement, and coordinated extrication efforts while operating in tight and complex conditions. Scenarios like these push firefighters to think critically, adapt quickly, and work together under pressure, because no two crashes are ever the same.

Training like this is dirty, exhausting work, but it helps ensure that when someone is trapped and needs help fast, our crews are ready.

We’ll be here if you need us.

There’s no substitute for hands-on training.

Over the last two days, and continuing tomorrow, firefighters from A, B, and C Shifts alongside our volunteers have been participating in vehicle extrication training using realistic crash scenarios based on incidents that could happen right here in our community.

Today’s training scenario involved a simulated multi-vehicle crash with several trapped patients. Crews worked through scene size-up, vehicle stabilization, and coordinated extrication efforts just as they would during a real emergency.

Once all “patients” were removed, the training shifted into repetition and experimentation, allowing crews to practice different extrication techniques, tool placement, vehicle cuts, and rescue strategies on vehicles.

We also had the pleasure of being joined by the crew from Lafayette Indiana Fire Department Engine 8. Training alongside neighboring departments is extremely valuable, especially because on real emergency scenes, we often work side-by-side. Building those relationships before the emergency happens helps strengthen communication, teamwork, and coordination when seconds matter most.

No two departments operate exactly the same, and training together gives everyone the opportunity to learn from one another, share ideas, and become more effective responders for the communities we serve.

We also want to give a major thank you to Joeys Enterprise Services LLC. for their continued support of this training. Joey’s charges us absolutely nothing for the vehicles and even helps set them up into realistic crash scenes for crews to work through. Partnerships like this make training opportunities like these possible, and we truly appreciate their support of the fire service and our community.

Modern vehicles are constantly changing, which means firefighters have to constantly train and adapt with them.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make this training possible, and to all of our members who spent time in the heat getting better at a skill we hope nobody ever needs, but one we must always be ready for.

We’ll be here if you need us.

The following is an official public announcement from Fire Chief Michael Stackhouse regarding ongoing department operations, staffing, future planning, and service initiatives within Wea Township Fire Department.

Within this announcement, the department is also formally announcing the purchase of a used 2019 Rosenbauer 100-foot aerial platform truck, which will enhance both local response capabilities and regional mutual aid support.

Yesterday, we shared news regarding the department’s ambulance acquisition as part of our long-term EMS strategy. Today’s announcement further outlines several ongoing initiatives focused on improving response capability, staffing, training, equipment, and service delivery to the residents of Wea Township.

The full announcement is included in the images below.

Today marks an important step forward for the future of emergency medical services in Wea Township.

We are proud to announce that the Wea Township Fire Department has officially taken delivery of a 2012 Ford F-550 ambulance, which will support the department’s long-term goal of becoming a certified Basic Life Support (BLS) Transport Agency.

While the ambulance is not yet in service, today’s delivery represents the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our department and the community we serve.

Over the coming months, the unit will undergo additional preparation, including equipment installation, inspections, certification processes, and a full exterior wrap prior to entering service. Attached is an early preview of the proposed design concept for the ambulance’s final appearance.

This initiative reflects our continued commitment to expanding the level of care and service available to our residents. Emergency medical calls make up a significant portion of the department’s response volume, and this investment helps position the department for the future while strengthening our ability to serve the community when help is needed most.

We also recognize that this announcement may raise questions about the future of EMS in Wea Township.

At this time, the department’s focus is on pursuing Basic Life Support (BLS) transport capabilities. While Advanced Life Support (ALS) services are not part of the immediate plan, the department will continue evaluating the evolving needs of our community and the best ways to meet those needs in the future.

We also want to emphasize that this initiative is not about replacing or competing with our existing EMS partners. The Wea Township Fire Department has a strong working relationship with the Tippecanoe Emergency Ambulance Service (TEAS), and we greatly value the service they provide throughout our county each and every day.

Fire-based EMS systems are utilized successfully in communities across the country and can provide several benefits, including increased local availability, enhanced continuity of care, and deeper integration between fire and EMS operations. As our department continues to grow, we believe exploring this model is a responsible step toward strengthening emergency services within Wea Township while continuing to collaborate closely with our healthcare and public safety partners.

This ambulance is not yet in service, and there is still significant work ahead before transport operations could begin. We are committed to approaching this process carefully, professionally, and transparently.

We want to thank our firefighters, leadership, township officials, and community members for their continued support as we move through this process.

More updates will be shared as the project progresses.

With the beautiful weather today, B Shift and several of our volunteers took advantage of the sunshine to get outside and train on hose deployment techniques.

Today’s training focused on trying different deployment methods, working through the pros and cons of each, and making adjustments along the way. Training is not always about doing something perfectly the first time. It is about learning, improving, and building confidence through repetition and teamwork.

Great work by everyone involved today. We’ll be here if you need us.

Sometimes the smallest gestures leave the biggest impact.

While Engine 41 was having lunch at Arni’s today, a young artist named Brayleigh surprised the crew with a handmade drawing and note that simply said, “I love you guys.”

Moments like these mean more than most people realize. Public safety is built on community, and reminders like this are something our firefighters carry with them.

Thank you, Brayleigh, for making our crew’s day a little brighter. We’ll make sure your artwork has a special place at the station. 🚒

Wea Township Fire Department was dispatched to the Benjamin Crossing neighborhood for a report of a possible gas leak at a residence.

Residents reported smelling what they believed may have been gas or a burning odor. Crews from Engine 41, Tanker 41, Utility 41, and Chief 41 responded and checked the home using thermal imaging cameras and gas meters.

After a thorough investigation, no emergency or active hazard was found, and units cleared the scene.

We encourage residents to call 911 if they smell gas, notice a burning odor, or believe something may be wrong. It is always better to have it checked and know everything is okay.

We’ll be here if you need us.

Earlier today, A Shift responded to a call you don’t see every day.

A group of ducklings had fallen into a storm drain and couldn’t get out. Our crew worked carefully to access the drain and safely bring each of them back to the surface.

Once rescued, the ducklings were placed near the nearby pond, where they quickly took off on their own.

Calls like this may seem small, but they’re a great reminder of what we’re here for. Whether it’s a person, a pet, or even a few ducklings, we’re always ready to help.

We’ll be here if you need us.

Edit: Since this seems to have gone viral; here is your reminder to check your smoke detectors!
