Yesterday, 5/28/26, a Lafayette PD Officer attempted to stop and educate juveniles recklessly riding e-motorcycles (not street-legal) in the downtown area. In two different incidents, the juveniles refused to stop and sped away doing wheelies. Due to the public safety concerns, no pursuit was initiated. After reviewing the incident and speaking with witnesses, the officer identified all three juveniles. The officer later met with the juveniles and their parents to discuss their riding behavior and to educate all parties that e-motorcycles are not street legal. The officer cited all three juveniles for CVC 12500(a) - Unlicensed Driver. The parents were admonished that if their child is caught riding these again, they could be cited for child endangerment.

Here are two recent incidents highlighting the danger of these electric motorcycles:

HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM PDT FRIDAY.

High temperatures are expected, reaching the low to mid-90s in the interior regions and the 80s along the coastline. This advisory affects the Bay Area and Central Coast.

The advisory will remain in effect until 8 PM PDT Friday. The elevated temperatures can have serious implications for individuals sensitive to heat, particularly those who lack effective cooling measures or adequate hydration. The risk of heat-related illnesses is significant under these conditions.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:

Staying hydrated is essential. Ensure you are drinking sufficient water and assist vulnerable individuals by providing them with water as well. When outdoors, please wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. Be vigilant for symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Additionally, do not leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as interior temperatures can become dangerously high within minutes.

On Saturday, March 14th, the Contra Costa County Search and Rescue (SAR) Team held a mock search training in downtown Lafayette. 88 searchers participated (pictured above) in the training.
A HUGE THANK YOU to the businesses and community members who interacted with the SAR team and helped them locate role players acting as at-risk adults. Your support made the training a great success for both the SAR team and the City of Lafayette.
The Contra Costa County Search and Rescue team is a highly valuable resource for Lafayette and our County. They are skilled in urban and wilderness search and rescue techniques, and in responding to large-scale disasters. The volunteer team members are truly unpaid professionals, having completed months of search, rescue, medical, and disaster-response training. They have helped us find missing persons in Lafayette and have spent days supporting major events, including the Napa/Sonoma fires and the Paradise fire. We are all very lucky to have them as part of our community.
You can learn more about their work and how to join them at contracostasar.org.
