Teche-Vermilion Fresh Water District activates its pumps during dry periods to move fresh water from the Atchafalaya River into local channels, preventing stagnation and improving water quality in Bayou Teche and the Vermilion River. After receiving under one inch of rainfall in July, we activated one pump. This marks the first time we have turned on a pump in 100 days.

The Bayou Fuselier Weir near Arnaudville restricts water flow from Bayou Teche to the Vermilion River. Additionally, controlled flow is diverted from Bayou Teche to the Vermilion River through the Ruth Canal which is located just downstream from Breaux Bridge.

The recent rain is welcome! Sending fresh water from the Atchafalaya River to Bayou Teche and Vermilion River is our mission. Due to the lack of consistent rainfall, we have run our pumps for 85 days this year, compared to just 10 days during the first quarter of 2025.

Fresh water flows through Ruth Canal! As an important part of our ongoing maintenance plan, we recently removed trash and debris from Ruth Canal and continue to monitor and maintain structures to ensure they are functioning efficiently.
