Elected officials and other community stakeholders enjoyed a beautiful fall afternoon for our Annual Inspection Meeting at the Pump Station in Krotz Springs.

All is well with pump station operations and drought conditions may cause another record-breaking year. Executive Director Donald Sagrera and Commission Chairman Ed Sonnier told the group non-stop pump operations continue to improve water quality on the Bayou Teche and Vermilion River.

Our mission is to provide fresh surface water from the Atchafalaya River to Bayou Teche, the Vermilion River and connecting streams to benefit the entire watershed. We have several partners who share this mission and work with us each day to help improve water quality.

We were pleased to join with Bayou Vermilion Preservation Association again this year for the State of The River Symposium. Centered around the theme “Connected by Water: Reimagining Our Watersheds,” this year's event was designed to foster meaningful conversations about watershed planning, design, and stewardship. We explored regional case studies and connected with other organizations showcasing innovative work in conservation and preservation.

Teche-Vermilion Fresh Water District activates its pumps during dry periods to move fresh water from the Atchafalaya River into local channels, preventing stagnation and improving water quality in Bayou Teche and the Vermilion River. After receiving under one inch of rainfall in July, we activated one pump. This marks the first time we have turned on a pump in 100 days.

The Bayou Fuselier Weir near Arnaudville restricts water flow from Bayou Teche to the Vermilion River. Additionally, controlled flow is diverted from Bayou Teche to the Vermilion River through the Ruth Canal which is located just downstream from Breaux Bridge.

The recent rain is welcome! Sending fresh water from the Atchafalaya River to Bayou Teche and Vermilion River is our mission. Due to the lack of consistent rainfall, we have run our pumps for 85 days this year, compared to just 10 days during the first quarter of 2025.
