ESD1 Response Update

Earlier today, ESD1 personnel responded to a single-vehicle rollover crash near the bridge on Round Mountain. Upon arrival, crews quickly assessed the scene, secured the area, and provided patient care.

One patient was evaluated and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

We appreciate the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies and are grateful the injuries were not more serious. As always, we remind motorists to drive cautiously, remain alert, and adjust their speed to roadway and weather conditions.

Serving our community 24/7. πŸš‘πŸš’πŸš“

Recently, ESD1 personnel completed the Work Capacity Test (WCT), a critical component for wildland fire deployment readiness.

The WCT challenges personnel to walk 3 miles in under 45 minutes β€” while wearing a 45-pound weighted vest. This physically demanding evaluation helps ensure our crews are prepared for the strenuous conditions often faced on wildland incidents.

Successfully completing the WCT qualifies personnel for wildland deployments across Texas and nationwide in support of large-scale wildfire operations.

Following the physical assessment, personnel also complete an annual refresher course and hands-on skills evaluation, including the rapid deployment of an emergency fire shelter. During this timed evolution, firefighters must properly deploy the shelter and fully protect themselves inside it within established standards.

These trainings and evaluations help ensure ESD1 personnel remain mission-ready to protect lives, property, and communities wherever they are called to serve.

Over the last 24 hours, it has remained eventful for ESD1 personnel.

Last evening, crews responded to a two-vehicle collision with thankfully no injuries. As storms moved into the area, personnel were then dispatched to assist a kayaker who needed help due to rapidly changing weather conditions.

From emergency response on the roadways to water rescue assistance during severe weather, our crews remain ready to serve the community at any hour. We appreciate the continued support from the citizens we are proud to protect.

ESD 1 personnel assigned to the night shift remained busy overnight supporting active wildfire operations in the Amarillo (Canyon) area.

Crews worked through challenging conditions on an incident that has caused significant devastation and displaced many families from their homes.

While our personnel continue supporting suppression and coordination efforts, our thoughts and prayers remain with all of those impacted by these fires and the communities working toward recovery.

Since last week, additional ESD 1 personnel have been requested and deployed to the Amarillo area to assist and support state resources actively engaged in wildfire operations.

Our personnel have been assigned a variety of responsibilities ranging from boots-on-the-ground operations to supervisory and leadership roles during these large-scale incidents.

This exposure provides valuable experience working complex wildfire events while building relationships and partnerships that benefit not only the communities we are serving, but also the residents of ESD 1 through enhanced training, coordination, and operational readiness.

We are proud of the dedication and professionalism our personnel continue to demonstrate while representing ESD 1 across the state.

Yesterday, ESD1 personnel responded to a vehicle fire that was within feet of thick vegetation. Thanks to the caller not hesitating, the crew’s quick response and aggressive fire attack, the fire was successfully contained to the vehicle with no extension into the surrounding vegetation.

With current conditions across parts of Texas remaining dry and vulnerable, this incident could have quickly become devastating. We are proud of the rapid actions and professionalism displayed by our personnel in preventing a potentially significant wildfire.

We remind the public to remain vigilant and report smoke or fire immediately by calling 9-1-1.

Our wildland firefighters continue suppression efforts on the 34,005-acre Hungate Fire in Randall County and the 1,859-acre Comanche Fire in Motley County, while additional resources remain on standby for new requests for assistance across the state.

Hot, dry, and windy conditions continue with temperatures near 100Β°F, single-digit humidity, and winds increasing to ~25 mph across the High Plains. Fire danger will peak today (Sunday, May 17), with the potential for gusty, erratic winds from dry thunderstorms.

🚨 Stay wildfire aware! If you see smoke or a wildfire, call 911 immediately.

Texas A&M Forest Service has raised the Wildland Fire Preparedness Level to Level 2 as the potential for wildfire activity is expected to increase over the next several days, particularly in the High Plains, where high temperatures, low humidity, and dry vegetation is contributing to elevated risk.

Yesterday, our firefighters responded to 8 new wildfires that burned 24,774 acres.

We continue to monitor the situation and stand ready to respond to any requests for assistance.

After only about a week home to rest and reconnect with their families, Texas once again activated personnel from Travis County ESD 1 this week to assist with the Hunggate and Chocolate Chip Fires in Randall County in the Texas Panhandle.

Supporting state operations takes commitment at every level. It is demonstrated by the personnel who deploy away from home to serve communities in need, the crews who step up to backfill shifts to ensure our district remains fully covered, and the families at home who continue managing everyday life with limited support from their loved ones while they are away.

As of May 15 at 7:00 PM, Texas assigned resources have responded to 18 wildfires burning more than 55,850 acres statewide. Fire potential is expected to remain elevated across the High Plains through Sunday.

We are proud of the dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice shown by everyone involved. Please continue to keep all responding personnel, their families, and the affected communities in your thoughts as operations continue across Texas.

🚨 Stay Wildfire Aware! If you see smoke or fire, call 911 immediately.
