This past week, members of the LaGrange Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 3813 were dispatched to a car fire endangering a structure, shortly before 5pm shift change. Units arrived on scene shortly after dispatch and went to work. The side of the house was cooled initially to prevent any further damage, then the fire was extinguished. Fortunately, thanks to the metal siding and quick action by all units on scene, the structure sustained only minor damage.

While units were responding to the fire, an EMS call was dispatched. No LaGrange equipment was available to respond and as such the call was handled by a mutual aid ambulance from Union Vale Fire.

While units were clearing the fire, a 3rd call was dispatched for a gas odor inside a structure and shortly after that a 4th call in the district was transmitted for a medical. The in service fire equipment responded to the gas odor and found gas levels both outside and inside the house. The gas was shut off, the house was ventilated and the hazard was mitigated, while an in-service Paramedic fly-car responded to the medical to meet a mutual aid BLS ambulance.

The Paramedic cleared the EMS call and a 5th call in the district came in for power lines down starting a brush fire. Additional units cleared from the original fire and found a large brush fire with live primary power lines down on the ground. Additional resources were requested to contain the fire while units waited for the power to be cut. During this incident a 6th call in the district was transmitted for a medical. Two members were able to be diverted to staff an ALS ambulance and handled the medical.

While the ambulance was transporting an additional call came in for an MVA which was handled by 47-55 (Rescue) and the mutual aid ambulance was cancelled.

All of this elapsed over a period of less than three hours. If it weren’t for the surplus of personnel due to shift change there is a strong chance that some of these incidents would not have been mitigated as quickly and thoroughly as they were.

The LaGrange Professional Firefighters L3813 would like to formally congratulate Lt Mike Caso on his retirement from the United States Air Force. After 36 years of service to our country, achieving the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, and two tours of duty overseas, it is certainly a well deserved retirement. We would like to thank Lt. Caso, his family and all members of the armed services for their continued service and support of our nation.

Training is the very core of our existence. The saying goes “Don’t practice until you get it right, practice until you can’t get it wrong.

Today members of The LaGrange Professional Fire Fighters held a search drill. The premise was simple, take away your sight and use your other senses to find a brick in a pitch black room. Sounds simple but between the weight of the gear, the loss of feeling in your hands from the gloves, and an unfamiliar environment, it’s harder than it sounds. Training like this is essential for us to build muscle memory. Fire scenes are naturally chaotic, and if we ever have to search for a trapped victim having these skills engrained in us will only increase our competency and efficiency on the fireground.

Shortly after completing this training the members were dispatched to three separate medical calls in 42 minutes.

Recently members of the LaGrange Professional Firefighters Local 3818 were dispatched to an Auto Accident with injuries. While the first arriving ambulance provided EMS care to the drivers, the second arriving crew recognized a large amount of motor oil rapidly approaching an open storm drain. Speedy Dry was applied to the oil flow stopping its progress, potentially preventing groundwater contamination. The incident was stabilized further and medical care was rendered to all parties involved. Members were assisted at the scene by @nyspolice and @brandls_towing who were requested with their spill mitigation equipment. Due to the large amount of motor oil that was spilled @brandls_towing brought their street sweeper to the scene to ensure that the roadway was in as best condition possible as we are entering motorcycle season. LaGrange Professional Firefighters would like to express our gratitude to all assisting parties on this dynamic and complex event.

Most people don’t ever think about their local fire commissioner election. When they dial 911, they expect the right people to show up, with the right tools to help.

Now more then ever, that security is on the line. More and more often, Dutchess residents may not be getting the right people, with the right tools when they need it.

This isn’t hyperbole. The phrase “no medic available” is broadcast across 911 frequencies daily.

Congratulations to Firefighter Jeff Frazier for his retirement after 42 years of service to the LaGrange Fire District. Jeff has served the district as an outstanding Firefighter, EMT, and as the fleet mechanic through his years of service. Jeff was one of the Charter members of the LaGrange Professional Firefighters association. Even though he was the most senior member in the department, he was also the hardest working member. Jeff is a monument to what a Man, a Friend, and a Firefighter should be. Thank you for your service, you will be missed.

City of Poughkeepsie, Arlington and LaGrange fire, operating together as a regional technical rescue team, worked to free two workers buried to their waists in a trench collapse in the City of Poughkeepsie. Both patients were rescued and transported to Mid Hudson Regional hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries. This was all made possible by continued training by the special operations division made up of the three departments. Team work and coordination made for a positive outcome. Great job by all.

Great team work by all involved!

At 14:09 this afternoon Engines 3, 2 and Tower Ladder 2 were dispatched to 14 Dwight St. for a trench collapse with a victim with their legs buried. Engine 3 was on scene less than 4 minutes from dispatch and reported two patients buried up to their waists, and requested a technical rescue team.

The area technical rescue team with trench rescue qualified members, consisting of manpower from Poughkeepsie FD, Arlington Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2393 and LaGrange Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 3813, was dispatched to assist at the scene.

City of Poughkeepsie DPW was requested with hand tools and their vac truck to the scene as well as Central Hudson Gas & Electric to disconnect utilities to the property.

Off-duty personnel were requested to man a reserve engine out of Station 2 and mutual aid station coverage was also provided by Arlington FD and Roosevelt Fire Department - Engine Company 2. The Town of Poughkeepsie also provided their vac truck.

The first victim was extricated at 16:00, and the second was freed at 16:35. Both were transported to area hospitals by Mobile Life Support Services, and their conditions are currently unknown to us.

We’d like to thank all of our mutual aid (including both the City and Town DPWs) for their assistance. And we’d like to extend a special thank you to our dispatchers working behind the scenes to coordinate an uncommon incident with great professionalism and efficiency.

Also thank you to Mayor Rolison and Todd Bender for the use of their photos.
