We are excited to share that Maui County's Green Building fund has agreed to support our project to design and construct the first Living Building Challenge affordable home for a displaced Lahaina survivor, meeting the 80% AMI criteria. A Living Building home incorporates the world's only net positive impact design framework (basically LEED on steroids). These builds restore ecosystem function, control 100% of stormwater for maximum aquifer recharge, produce more energy than they use from the sun, treat and infiltrate all wastewater onsite, use only non-toxic materials in the build, divert 95% of the construction waste away from the landfill, grow food, and address equity in the community. If we truly want to rebuild a resilient and sustainable Lahaina, we must incorporate a regenerative design approach to new construction. This prototype home's plans and materials list will be shared publicly for others to incorporate into their designs. We await additional grant decisions from the Hawaii Community Foundation, Maui United Way, and Lahaina Rotary.
