Kittson County History Center/Museum

Kittson County History Center/Museum Our organization seeks to share and preserve the rich history of the Kittson County area. Bus tours and school groups are always welcome.

The Kittson County History Center, Museum and Genealogical Research Library has something for just about everyone in every age group. Located inside the museum are multiple exhibits which include early pioneer life and many others that provide a snapshot of the County and its citizens. There is also an extensive collection of large agricultural machinery, a transportation exhibit which includes a

replica of a Red River Ox Cart used during the 1800's to a more "current" (1929) Harley Davidson motorcycle. The building of Lake Bronson State Park (formerly Two Rivers) by the Work Projects Administration (WPA) and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s gets special attention along with various wildlife displays throughout. On the campus of The Museum you will find several buildings that track The County's historic roots and the role it played in the State and region's development such as the James Hill Paymaster's building, The Soo Line Railroad depot and caboose. The Two River church is also on the campus having been restored along with an old one-room school house that was used up until the early 1950s. In addition you will find the oldest standing structure in The County, the Erick and Emma Norland log cabin which was built in 1881. Further restoration efforts for this historic structure are currently underway. There is also a new addition to the Museum which began in 2019 that is close to completion. The extra space will house more artifacts and displays along with providing a larger meeting and event room. Lastly the History Center contains thousands of records and artifacts that are beneficial to genealogical research in their research library which is growing with each passing year. There is a new exhibit at the Museum but we NEED YOUR HELP to complete it!
The display is showcasing LBHartz and the impact the company had in the Valley. The walls have articles from various along with various trinkets/memorabilia from stores.
What we need is larger items for the empty floor space. Do you have an old grocery cart from a previous Hartz store? An old Hartz display case? Let us know if you are willing to loan or donate items. Call Cindy at the Museum to talk about what you have - 218-754-4100 or send pictures at [email protected].
In a second post will be pictures of the exhibit!
