The route will start at Lakeside Park and go South on Lake Avenue to Main Street. West on Main Street to S.W. 9th Avenue. South on 9th Avenue to Lake Butler Elementary School at which time special athletes will join us and continue down SR121 (S.W. 6th Street) to Lake Avenue and South to Union County High School.

There will be very brief detours during this time and should not interrupt the normal flow of traffic throughout town. We always look forward to participating in this event each year.

***TROPICAL STORM RAFAEL UPDATE***

Tropical Storm Rafael is forecast to travel northwest over Cuba and continue travelling northwest through the Gulf of Mexico. Only the most extreme western portions of the Florida panhandle are near the forecast cone of uncertainty. Rafael is projected to become a Category 1 Hurricane, but is also forecast to weaken back down to Tropical Storm strength before making landfall somewhere in the western Florida panhandle or west of Florida.

The only effect Union County should expect to receive from Tropical Storm Rafael are increased rains tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday. We are forecasted to receive 2 to 3 inches of rain through Friday morning. All operations will continue as normal, unless we see drastic changes in the forecast.

***HALLOWEEN EVENTS & SAFETY TIPS - UNION COUNTY***

The City of Lake Butler will observe Trick or Treat/Halloween tonight, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31st from 6pm-8pm.

Increased Law Enforcement patrol will be throughout the city.

It is the goal of Sheriff Brad Whitehead and the Union County Sheriff’s Office that all remain safe and alert during this time of year. The Union County Sheriff’s Office is offering these safety tips for kids, parents and motorists to ensure that Halloween and the activities involved are enjoyable for all.

Those passing out candy, please have your porch light on and ensure a safe entrance is well lit.

TIPS FOR KIDS:
• Attend an organized event, or it is a good idea to stay in your own neighborhood, go with a friend, or in a group with an adult
• Go only to homes with lights on or Halloween decorations displayed.
• Do not eat any treats until they have been checked by an adult.
• Watch for cars when crossing the street.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:
• Make sure your child’s costume allows freedom of movement and good visibility.
• Carrying a flashlight or light stick makes kids more visible. (Union County Sheriff’s Office will be providing glow necklaces the night of Halloween)
• Young children should always go with an adult.
• Insist that children trick or treat with a group.
• Before children eat any treats, check them.

TIPS FOR MOTORISTS:
• Exercise extreme caution when driving and be alert for excited children, whose vision may be obscured by masks or costumes. Drive very slow throughout neighborhoods.
• Use caution and be aware of children while backing vehicles out of driveways or parking spaces.
• Use caution if transporting children from house to house.
Extra patrol units will be on high alerts for speeders, drunk drivers and registered s*x offenders. Increased patrol will be available for potential drunk drivers.

***FEMA REPS IN UNION COUNTY***

There will be 2 FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance Teams visiting residences in Union County starting tomorrow (Wednesday - 10/23), to assist with Hurricane Helene claims and to inform residents of what types of financial assistance are available.

The Union County Sheriff's Office - Division of Emergency Management has provided the FEMA teams with a list of streets with residences that reported damages to our office, so they will be visiting those first. The teams will also be looking for other residences that may have been damaged during Hurricane Helene that did not report damages locally.

If residents are not home at the time, the teams will leave information on front doors or driveway gates.
