***UNION COUNTY BURN BAN LIFTED***

The burn ban has been lifted. The areas of Union County that were still in burn ban territory have received rainfall over the last few days. Dry conditions have improved significantly. Also, the forecast still looks great: 1.5-3 inches of rain this weekend with afternoon thunderstorm chances over the next few weeks. However, the entirety of Union County is still in the highest drought level possible: Hopefully, summer rains continue past the next 2 weeks, so that we do not have to consider another burn ban this year.

We ask all residents and visitors to remain vigilant during this continued long-term drought, even though the burn ban has been lifted. Please exercise caution with any outdoor activities, stay mindful of fire safety, and report any signs of dangerous smoke or fire to 911. Resident outreach to 911 for any sign of smoke has been outstanding. This has resulted in a lower number of large brush / forest fire responses when compared to surrounding counties, as problems are found before they become a larger issue.

Your continued cooperation is essential in helping protect Union County.
Together, we can reduce the risk and keep Union County safe until long term drought conditions improve.

***UNION/BRADFORD MEMORIAL SERVICE***

Last night, May 14, 2026, our agency held our annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service at First Christian Church of Lake Butler. Thank you to all the agencies represented and their attendance: Florida Department of Corrections, Bradford County Sheriff’s Office, Lawtey Police Department, Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, Florida Highway Patrol as well as others.

Thank you to our guest speaker, Warden Barry Reddish, Regional Director John Palmer, Pastor Shane Collins and many others that performed during our service. Thank you to the Florida Department of Corrections for hosting this years’ service.

We would also like to thank Terry’s Florals of Lake Butler for donating the Law Enforcement wreath for our agency and Julia’s Florist of Starke for the flowers.

It was a beautiful and well-attended service to remember those in Union and Bradford counties that paid the ultimate sacrifice. Their service will never be forgotten.

***UNION COUNTY BURN BAN EXTENDED***

Drought conditions have slightly improved due to the 0.5 - 0.75 inches of rain we received over the weekend (keep in mind that we need 22 inches of rain to catch up, and that number is climbing). However, fire weather conditions for Union County have continued to increase considerably since the last update. The entirety of Union County is in the highest drought level possible: Level 4 (Exceptional Drought - see graphic below). The active Union County Burn Ban and local state of emergency have been extended until 5/16/26, unless cancelled prior due to significant rainfall. Union County is only expected to receive around 1 inch of rainfall over the next 14 days. Spring / Summer fire season is here for the first time in a long while, as is now evident. We are seeing many quickly expanding fires in surrounding counties. Please continue to call 911 for any sign of fire or smoke! We have been able to shut potential hazards down before they become a problem. We had at least one fire started by a lightning strike on Sunday (5/3) in the eastern portion of Union County. Fire response was quick and thorough, with continued hot spot investigations Monday (5/4) at that location.

This burn ban prohibits outdoor burning, with the exception of attended and monitored cooking equipment (gas or charcoal grill). This burn ban also prohibits the use of fireworks and any other explosive or combustible compounds, including flares. See attached Union County Burn Ban Extension for additional details.

We ask all residents and visitors to remain vigilant during this period. Please exercise caution with any outdoor activities, stay mindful of fire safety, and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately to 911. Resident outreach to 911 for any sign of smoke has been outstanding to this point. This has resulted in a lower number of brush / forest fire responses when compared to surrounding counties, as problems are found in Union County before they become a larger issue. Your continued cooperation is essential in helping protect Union County. Together, we can reduce the risk and keep Union County safe until conditions improve.
