Louisiana Police Jury Association Black Caucus Condemns U.S. Supreme Court Decision in Callais v. Landry
Lafayette, Louisiana— April 30, 2026— The Louisiana Police Jury Association Black Caucus issued a strong statement in response to this week’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in Callais v. Landry, calling it a devastating setback for voting rights and democratic representation in America.
“This ruling strikes at the very heart of our democracy and undermines the fundamental principle of ‘one person, one vote,’” said AB Rubin, Police Jury Black Caucus President. “By effectively dismantling Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, the Court has removed one of the last and most critical protections ensuring fair representation for Black and Brown communities.”
As parish officials serving on the front lines of local governance, members of the Black Caucus emphasize their direct role in administering elections and witnessing the real-world impact of district maps and voter access.
“We see firsthand how fair and equitable districting shapes the voice of our communities,” the statement continued. “Today’s decision does more than affect Louisiana—it sends a dangerous signal nationwide that discriminatory gerrymandering and the dilution of minority voting power may go unchecked.”
The Caucus warned that the ruling could have far-reaching consequences, weakening safeguards that have historically protected marginalized communities from inequitable representation.
“We are deeply concerned that this decision opens the door for practices that erode public trust and silence the voices of communities that have fought for generations to be heard,” said Mike Smith, Black Caucus Vice President.
The Louisiana Police Jury Association Black Caucus reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for fair elections, equitable representation, and policies that protect the voting rights of all citizens.
“We will continue to stand firm in our mission to ensure that every vote counts and every voice matters,” the statement concluded.
