Historic Chennault Air Force Base β€” Vol. 1, Issue 2 is here!

The September 2026 edition of the Historic Chennault Air Force Base Quarterly Newsletter is out now, and we have a lot to report. What started as a conversation between a grandfather and his 10-year-old grandson has grown into one of the most exciting historical preservation efforts in Southwest Louisiana β€” and the momentum keeps building.

Here's a look at what's active and underway:

πŸ›οΈ Chennault Veterans Museum β€” Work is progressing on establishing a premier veterans museum on the former air base grounds, honoring Lt. General Claire Lee Chennault and the service members who shaped this community's history. The vision: a must-visit cultural destination for SWLA and beyond.

🌿 Lt. General Claire Lee Chennault Plaza β€” Plans are in development for a commemorative public plaza featuring architectural hardscape, natural landscaping, and four central high-fidelity historical monuments. A permanent space to reflect, learn, and honor.

πŸͺ§ Historic Street Signage Initiative β€” New commemorative street signs carrying the Historic Chennault Air Force Base brand and logo are in the works, bringing a unified identity to the former base corridors.

🚧 Historic Entrance Sign Project β€” Gateway signage is being planned for two key access points: the West Entrance at I-210 and Sen. J. Bennett Johnston Avenue, and the North Entrance on Main Street. First impressions that tell the story before you even step out of the car.

πŸ“± Social Media Campaign β€” You're already here! Our Facebook and Instagram presence launched this summer and is bringing the history of this remarkable place to a new, multi-generational audience week by week.

The Historic Chennault Air Force Base Driving Tour Brochure is available FREE at 18 locations across Southwest Louisiana β€” pick one up and explore the former base on your own time. Find a location near you:

Did You Know? 2,000 Pilots Trained Here

Did you know? When Lake Charles Army Flying School graduated its final class in January 1943, more than 2,000 pilots had trained on this very airfield. From single-engine fighter training under the Gulf Coast Army Air Force Training Center to later bomber crew training, this ground shaped the careers of thousands of American airmen.

The 68th Bomb Wing at Lake Charles

In 1951, the 68th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing (Medium) was reactivated at Lake Charles under Colonel Lowell G. Sidwell. The wing underwent operational training until June 1952, when it was declared combat-ready and redesignated as a medium bombardment wing. By 1953, the wing was flying B-47 jet medium bombers β€” a major leap forward in Strategic Air Command capability.

We Remember β€” Patriot Day

On this National Day of Service and Remembrance, we pause to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to thank the service members, first responders, and military families who answered the call in the years since. Historic Chennault Air Force Base stands as a reminder of generations of Americans who served.

November 14, 1958 β€” The Day of the Renaming

On November 14, 1958, Lake Charles Air Force Base officially became Chennault Air Force Base, honoring the late Lt. Gen. Claire Lee Chennault. The ceremony marked a new chapter for the base, which by then had grown into a key installation within the Strategic Air Command. It's the same date captured on the original site plan blueprint Ron Childress later discovered at McNeese.
