Lake Charles City Court will host a Landlord/Tenant Workshop on Wednesday, August 26, at 3 p.m. in Courtroom A of the City Courthouse, located at 118 W. Mill Street.
➡️The program is designed for renters, landlords and anyone interested in learning about lease laws and the rights of each party.

NEW LOUISIANA LAW: MOVE OVER & SLOW DOWN — IT’S NOT JUST FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES ANYMORE!

Louisiana drivers need to be aware of an important change to the state’s Move Over law.

Senate Bill 40, now Act No. 234, expands R.S. 32:125 to help protect people and vehicles stopped on or near our roadways.

🚗 WHAT DOES THE LAW REQUIRE?

When approaching a parked, disabled, immobilized, or nonoperational vehicle on or near the highway that is displaying flashing lights, hazard lamps, or other emergency warning devices, drivers must take precautions.

➡️ On an interstate or highway with two or more lanes traveling in the same direction:
Move into a lane not adjacent to the stopped vehicle, when it is possible and safe to do so.

➡️ If you cannot safely change lanes:
Slow down to a reasonably safe speed and maintain a safe speed for the road and traffic conditions.

➡️ On a two-lane road or highway:
Slow down and maintain a safe speed for the conditions.

🚓 REMEMBER: When an authorized emergency vehicle is approaching with its authorized warning signals, drivers are still required to yield, pull as close as possible to the right-hand edge or curb, stop clear of intersections, and remain stopped until the emergency vehicle has passed, unless directed otherwise by law enforcement.

This law is about more than avoiding a ticket. A disabled vehicle on the shoulder may have someone standing nearby changing a tire, checking damage, waiting for assistance, or dealing with an emergency.

Give them room. Move over when you safely can. If you can’t move over, SLOW DOWN.

A few seconds of caution can help prevent a tragedy.

Our deputies were out bright and early this morning welcoming our elementary students back to class. We loved seeing all the smiling faces and helping kick off a great new school year.

🎒📚 IT’S THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL! 🚌
Students are heading back to the classroom today, which means our school zones and roadways will be busy once again.
🚸 Slow down in school zones.
👀 Watch for students walking and biking.
🚌 Be alert for school buses making frequent stops.
🛑 Know when you’re required to stop for a school bus.
When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, pay attention and STOP when required by law.
Give yourself a little extra time, put the distractions away, and stay alert behind the wheel.
Let’s work together to make the first day of school a safe one for our students, teachers, bus drivers, and families!

🚌 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER

As students return to school tomorrow, please slow down and stay alert! Watch your speed in school zones, keep an eye out for children walking or biking, and be prepared for school buses making frequent stops.
