Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while drowsy can have dangerous, and sometimes deadly, consequences. During Florida’s Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, we are highlighting simple ways to stay safe.

✅ GET ENOUGH SLEEP: This is the best way to ensure you stay alert while driving. If you have stayed awake for 24 hours or more, do not drive.

✅TAKE A BREAK: On long trips, try to stop every 100 miles or two hours. The Florida Department of Transportation operates dozens of rest areas along Florida’s interstate highways for you to stop and take a break.

✅USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM: Ride with someone else and switch off who drives to give yourself a break.

🐊 As UF gets ready to kick off the season this Saturday in the Swamp, Head Coach Jon Sumrall is reminding everyone that safety is a team effort.

Whether you’re heading to the game, tailgating or celebrating after the last whistle, remember to:

🏈 Plan ahead.
🚗 Drive responsibly.
🤝 Look out for each other.

Throwback to the early, early beginnings of I-10 in Florida.

Taken in September of 1957, this photo shows a group of people looking over the proposed plans for I-10 through Tallahassee just a few years before the first section of this critical corridor was completed on the east side of Florida as part of Eisenhower’s Interstate System. Nearly 70 years later, this coast-to-coast interstate has transformed transportation in North Florida, connecting communities and fueling economic growth across the region.

FDOT FAQ: Why does FDOT do road construction at night? 🌙 🚧

Nighttime construction helps reduce impacts during peak travel hours. When possible, crews schedule lane closures during periods of lower traffic volume to minimize delays, keep traffic moving and maintain safety for motorists and workers.

When traveling through a nighttime work zone, stay alert, slow down and watch for changing traffic patterns. Please use extra caution and help keep our crews and fellow motorists safe.

Whether you're driving to work, to school, or to the beach, buckle up every time.

A seat belt is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself and others on the road. Making safe choices behind the wheel can save lives and help create safer roads for everyone.

🚩A single lane closure and flagging operation is expected to take place nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sundays to Thursdays on U.S. 17 between I-95 and the Georgia state line as part of a resurfacing improvements project.
