Today we remember Deputy Mark Tonkin.
Deputy Tonkin served the sheriff’s department for eight years and died while on duty on October 24,
1988, in a helicopter crash near El Centro while serving with Operation Border Ranger, a multi-agency
narcotics enforcement program. He was one of eight victims, including deputies from Los Angeles,
Riverside, and Imperial counties, and members of the California National Guard.
Deputy Tonkin joined the department in 1981, serving in the Main Jail, as a court bailiff, and later in
North Patrol. In January 1988, he was assigned to the Career Criminal Apprehension Team.
Thank you for your service and sacrifice to the residents of Orange County, we will never forget you.

Recently, Unincorporated South Orange County had a few residences broken into while the homeowners were away. At this time, there is nothing to suggest a significant threat to the area for additional burglaries.

In light of this though, we want to remind everyone to lock their doors while away and secure any valuables in your home. If you see something suspicious, please call Sheriff’s Dispatch at 714-647-7000.

Someone got their Super Bowl celebrations started early. Last night, in the area of Trabuco Canyon and Trabuco Creek, one of our deputies conducted a traffic stop. The driver was determined to be under the influence and was arrested for DUI.

Whoever you are cheering for today, please remember not to drive under the influence. Get a designated driver or use a ride share.
