What’s dead and long gone, but still well-preserved? A fossil! 😉

On exactly this day in 1964, our library announced newly acquired books, among them the title “Fossils in America”:

“Fossils are becoming almost as popular as rocks, to collectors. To meet requests for information, the Library adds to its holdings this book, which explains the nature and origins of fossils, tells how a collection should be assembled, and how to identify and classify fossils.” [Chippewa Herald-Telegram, June 18, 1964]

A recent addition to our current collection is “The Rockhounding Encyclopedia” with similar content, and also featuring America’s top 500 rockhounding sites. This book was a donation from the Chippewa Valley Gem and Mineral Society, who gifted the book after one of their popular collaborative displays at the library in April.

PS. And this year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme is somewhat related: Unearth a Story. ⛏ Ask for your reading logs next time you visit the library!

Thank you for being a friend! 😀

We want to thank our volunteer organization, Friends of the Chippewa Falls Public Library, for their dedication in raising funds for our library activities.

This month we highlight Wisconsin Farmers Union, whose donation helped us hire expert mycologist Tavis Lynch for a well-attended Family Fungi Foray event in October in Kemper’s Woods.

Wisconsin Farmers Union has had a strong presence in Chippewa Falls for close to 100 years. From the outset, Chippewa Falls was selected as the legal headquarters of the Wisconsin Farmers Union. The first meeting of the organization’s board of directors occurred November 29, 1930, at the Hotel Northern. And currently, the headquarters are housed in the restored Market on River building, overlooking the Chippewa River.

Thanks, Wisconsin Farmers Union, for being a library friend!

The rain might miss us, but it might not! Let's be safe, not soggy and meet at the library instead!
