Kidder Township Residents,

The Kidder Township Police Department would like to give residents and visitors a heads up that increased traffic and pedestrian activity is expected throughout the area over the coming days.

The Union Pacific’s famous “Big Boy” No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive; will be traveling through nearby Carbon and Luzerne Counties as part of its Pennsylvania tour. While the locomotive will not be stopping inside Kidder Township, many railfans and visitors are expected to travel through our area to catch a glimpse of the historic train.

Because of this, motorists should expect:
• Increased traffic near major roadways and railroad crossings
• Additional pedestrian activity near train viewing locations
• Possible slowdowns and temporary traffic backups

Please remember:
• Never stop on railroad tracks or crossings
• Do not park along roadways in unsafe areas
• Stay off railroad property and obey all posted signs
• Use caution around crowds and pedestrians

In addition, Pocono Raceway event traffic is also expected to heavily impact the area this weekend, especially along:
• State Route 903
• State Route 115

Please plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and drive safely and patiently throughout the weekend.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and hope everyone enjoys the events safely!

Big history is rolling into the gorge. Union Pacific’s “Big Boy” No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, is expected to travel through the Lehigh Gorge area on Saturday, June 13, 2026, with an approximate arrival through the gorge around 5:30 PM on its way to Nesquehoning. This is not just a train passing by, it is 133 feet of American railroading muscle, weighing about 1.2 million pounds, built in the 1940s for Union Pacific and restored so people can still feel what real steam power looked, sounded, and smelled like when railroads moved the country.

For Jim Thorpe and the Lehigh Gorge, it almost feels like the scenery was made for a moment like this. The town already has deep railroad roots, old coal country character, mountain walls, river bends, stone bridges, and that postcard downtown that makes visitors slow down before they even find a parking spot. On Sunday, June 14, 2026, Big Boy is listed for an approximate departure through the gorge around 10:00 AM, so expect extra traffic, extra cameras, and plenty of people trying to find that perfect safe viewing spot. If you are heading into Jim Thorpe, Nesquehoning, or anywhere near Lehigh Gorge State Park that weekend, give yourself room, be patient, and remember, this is one of those rare Pennsylvania moments where the traffic might actually be worth it.
