The planning boundary of the MPO is approximately 100 square miles.

The mission of the Lake Havasu MPO is to provide open leadership and guidance for regional transportation planning through a cooperative effort that will result in practical and positive growth model beneficial to residents, visitors, and businesses. INTRODUCTION
In 2010, the United States Census indicated that Lake Havasu City had surpassed the 50,000 population threshold thus requiring the estab

lishment of a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The LHMPO planning area boundary encompasses all areas within the Lake Havasu City limits, the Mohave County area north of the City limits known as Desert Hills, Havasu Gardens, Crystal Beach and the Mohave County area south of the City known as Horizon Six.

In 1962, President Kennedy signed into law the Federal Highway Act that required urban areas of more than 50,000 residents to create or designate an interjurisdictional planning organization responsible for carrying out a continuous, cooperative, and comprehensive (3-C) transportation planning process.

MPO works within a unique framework of state, environmental, resource, and political contexts. External forces of changing technologies, economics, culture, and demographics are creating a formidable array of challenges for MPOs in the coming years.

DID YOU KNOW??

An MPO is a governmental entity required in urban areas with a population of 50,000 persons or more. The MPO is charged with providing a comprehensive regional transportation planning process for the designated planning area. MPOs work with ADOT and other partner agencies to develop federal- and state-required transportation plans and programs for their regions. An MPO ensures federal spending on transportation occurs through a comprehensive, continuous, and cooperative (3-C) planning process.

The Lake Havasu City MPO is one of three new MPOs in Arizona. It is located in Mohave County in western Arizona, accessed by SR-95. Located along the Colorado River between Yuma and Bullhead City, Lake Havasu City attracts recreationalists, retirees and vacationers. Throughout the year, the population fluctuates, much like many of the Arizona destinations during the fall, winter and spring months.
