Thank you to U.S. Representative Cory Mills for your follow-through in turning our initial conversations during your 2022 campaign trail, and my visit with you in Washington, D.C. in 2023, into real action toward improving Lake Helen’s water quality. I am proud to be part of Lake Helen and US history as these efforts move from conversation to action.

Thank you as well to Former Commissioner Lynda Hope Donato for bringing Congressman Mills to Lake Helen and helping connect him with City staff to move this work forward.

This week, the House advanced key FY26 appropriations bills, restoring fiscal discipline and ending years of Biden-era waste. These bills prioritize public safety, infrastructure, secure water systems, and responsible spending, and now head to the Senate.

Because of this work, I’m proud to have secured community project funding that directly benefits Volusia County, delivering targeted investments to strengthen public safety, modernize local infrastructure, and protect our natural environment without reckless Washington spending.

Delivering real results for Volusia County and Florida’s 7th District.

Veterans Services Aids 17 Homeless Veterans, Becomes Safe Place

VOLUSIA COUNTY, FLORIDA – Volusia County Veterans Services has strengthened its dedication to veteran welfare by providing critical assistance to homeless veterans and completing specialized su***de prevention training.

17 Homeless Veterans Assisted

Staff partnered with the U.S. Veterans Administration to host three SURGE (Supportive Services for Veteran Families Rapid Re-housing Grant) events in DeLand and Daytona Beach. These coordinated outreach efforts assisted 17 homeless veterans, connecting them with essential services and housing resources.

"These events demonstrate our ongoing commitment to ensuring no veteran faces homelessness or crisis alone," said Veterans Services Director Scott Olson. "The immediate impact was significant – we were able to place several veterans in emergency housing, including one veteran with three children under the age of nine."

The SURGE events brought together multiple agencies to provide comprehensive services including housing assistance, healthcare enrollment, mental health resources, and benefits counseling. The collaborative approach allowed staff to address each veteran's unique circumstances and connect them with appropriate long-term support.

Veterans Safe Place

Staff members also completed comprehensive veterans su***de training through The Fire Watch, earning the organization designation as a Veterans Safe Place. This certification equips the team with enhanced skills to identify at-risk veterans and provide immediate intervention and support resources.

As a newly designated Veterans Safe Place, Volusia County Veterans Services joins a network of trained locations committed to veteran su***de prevention and crisis intervention. The training ensures staff can provide immediate support while connecting veterans with professional mental health resources.
