Memorial Day weekend means more people enjoying our beaches, but it is also an important time for nesting shorebirds. As you head out to the coast, remember to share the shore with the birds that call it home.
With rain and possible flooding in the forecast, nests and chicks may already be facing extra challenges. Shorebirds nest directly on the sand, making eggs and chicks incredibly difficult to spot. Even if weather moves nests around or changes the beach landscape, keep an eye out for posted nesting areas, eggs, resting birds, and tiny chicks that may be nearby.
You can help by:
🐦 Giving birds plenty of space
🐦 Respecting posted nesting areas and signs
🐦 Keeping pets away from nesting sites
🐦 Watching your step, especially near dunes and open sand
Small actions can make a big difference for birds trying to raise the next generation. Thank you for helping us protect nesting shorebirds this holiday weekend.
